Smart cards add convenience to employee ID programs, access control systems, cashless payment systems, and more – but only if the cards are easy to use! One way to keep your smart card close at hand for scanning throughout the day is by slot punching your card and using an ID accessory like a lanyard or reel.

Be Careful When Slot Punching Smart Cards

When you order your smart cards from AlphaCard, you have the option to get them slot punched by the manufacturer. If you do not order them pre-punched (if you plan to print on the cards, you cannot slot punch them first), you can slot punch them yourself using a slot punch.

If you slot punch the cards, be extremely careful! The cards should include indicators of where to slot punch – doing so in any other location can break the smart chip and other embedded technology, making your card useless.

How ID Accessories Make Cards Easier To Use

Once a card is slot punched, you can easily attach it to ID accessories like lanyards, badge reels, and strap clips. These accessories keep your cards close at hand while working, so you can quickly scan your cards without digging through a bag.

If you want to protect your cards so they last longer, you can also place the card into a badge holder (and then you can skip the slot punch step). For cards that need to be removed for scanning, a dispenser-style badge holder makes it easy to remove your cards.
