ID card printers with a rewritable mode are able to print, erase, and reprint special rewritable ID cards without using any ribbons or ink. This method of printing minimizes waste and saves on supply costs.

Unlike other ID card printers, rewritable printing does not use a printer ribbon. Instead, the rewritable cards are made of a temperature-sensitive material and the card design shows up when the printhead heats up sections of the card. Rewritable cards are available with or without a magnetic stripe.

Rewritable cards are limited to solid black or blue monochrome printing without gradients or shading, which makes them best for text and simple graphics. The cards can be erased and rewritten up to 500 times per card, so they are ideal for temporary passes and badges.
