Scratch-off ribbons are a specialized type of ribbon that is used to hide information on an ID card such as a PIN number for a gift card or a coupon code. ID cards first must be printed with a standard YMCKO or monochrome ribbon to apply the text and graphics to the card. The YMCKO or monochrome ribbon is then replaced with the scratch-off ribbon and the card layout must be changed in order for the scratch-off material to be printed in the right place. To apply the scratch-off foil, cards are sent through the printer in a second pass.
