Reverse transfer printers are a revolution in ID card printing. Rather than traditional direct-to-card techniques such as dye sublimation and thermal transfer, reverse transfer uses an entirely different process to produce ID cards. Reverse transfer printers, also called high definition printers (HDP), produce cards with crisp text and photo-quality images. These ID cards are especially durable and resistant to alterations and counterfeit attempts.

Reverse transfer printers produce a mirror image of the card design on a thin film. Heat and pressure then bonds the sheath to the card, sandwiching the ink between the two layers. The result is a secure and durable card that stands up to scratches, friction and fading. Attempts to remove the film will ruin text and images, making it secure against alterations and duplication.

Reverse transfer printers, such as the Fargo HDP5000, feature true over-the-edge printing which is essential for printing on smart cards, proximity cards and others with embedded electronics. Another advantage over dye-sublimation printers is the ability to print on matte cards. Also, some reverse transfer printers can be upgraded with a module that enables card lamination.
