How many users will be printing from your ID card printer? The answer to this question will help you know which type of printer you need, from a printer designed for a single user to something the entire team can share.
The connection type your ID card printer has is what determines how many people can easily use it. There are three types of connectivity you can choose from:
- USB, the most common
- Ethernet, quickly becoming a standard feature
- WiFi, the newest and not widely available
USB
USB connectivity is the most common type, designed to connect your printer to a single computer. This is the best option if your ID card printer will be used in one location, such as the HR office to print IDs for new employees or a reception desk for visitor cards.
Ethernet
Growing more common, Ethernet is still mostly offered as an upgrade on printers. This connection type makes it easy for multiple people to connect to the printer in a networked office environment. One thing to know before you purchase an Ethernet-enabled printer – unless you move the software from computer to computer with a Secure USB Key, you will need a separate software license for each user.
WiFI
WiFi is the newest and least common connection type. While not standard on printers yet, this growing technology will also make it easy for multiple users to connect, similar to an Ethernet printer.
