A homeless shelter in York, England upgraded their security system to provide flexible access control that’s easy on the wallet. The Arc Light Project, a direct access shelter for homeless people recently moved into a custom designed building, and with it came a custom designed access control system. A state of the art electronic smart lock system provided the perfect security solution for the shelter.

The shelter provides emergency accommodations for single men and women and couples that do not have children. Along with rooms for clients, the facility boasts counseling, training, education, health, fitness, and community facilities. Guests at the shelter are given smart cards that control the electronic locks to their rooms. Electronic locks control 60 doors throughout the building.
There were many benefits that came along with the installation of the new system. Smart card locks removed the need for keys, which can be expensive to replace. The access control system is streamlined throughout the building, eliminating the need for several security systems onsite. One software package controls the entire site. The access system is also secure. Smart card keys can instantly be deleted from the system if one is reported lost or stolen. Access related information is encrypted on the smart cards. Time controlled access gives the staff the ability to restrict people from entering the building if they have missed curfew. Wall readers at main entrance points update and receive information from the smart cards at all times.
