Parents, students and teachers are at odds over a new ID card program proposed for the Dover, PA school district. Dover high recently added a comprehensive series of video surveillance cameras – 26 in all – in and around the high school campus. But, school administrators say, that’s just not enough.

Now administrators want to institute a policy requiring students to display a student ID – with barcode – at all times when on school grounds. Officials insist that the visible bar codes will help maintain security, and displaying an ID card with a lanyard make other everyday processes more efficient by always having the card at hand.. Students will be able to use the barcode to check out library books and eat in the school cafeteria.
However, opinions are split over where the badges will be effective. Some teachers say that students ignore many current policies, including dress code standards, and because of this, the badge program will not be successful. Others say that it’s an unnecessary measure and could bring problems like lawsuits.
To solve the problem over displayed student IDs, Dover administrators will be distributing a survey to parents and students to get their opinions. Until then, the security cameras will act alone.
