Northern Michigan University recently upgraded their security systems in residence halls with a new card access system that links student access to their Wildcat Express student ID cards. The university decided to implement the new system to increase efficiency and security for the on campus buildings. Using student IDs as access cards makes it easier for university officials to manage the locking system for exterior doors to the residence halls.

Upon entering the residence halls, students will now swipe their ID cards. Information from the access cards, including the student’s name, NMU identification number, timestamp, and whether or not the student was granted entry, will be sent to a squadron box and then relayed to Public Safety. Only management at Public Safety and certain administrators at the Housing and Residence Life Office can access the information.
The access control card program greatly increases campus security and efficiency especially in the event of an emergency. All exterior doors to residence halls can be locked by Public Safety at their station instead of locking each exterior door manually. If cards are reported lost, they can be deactivated immediately.
