Four public elementary schools in Detroit have partnered with Health Alliance Plan to create new student ID cards. The new child safety cards are designed to help police in an emergency, and both parents and the school district will have a copy of the ID card.

The cards will have a photo of the child, along with their fingerprint and other important information. This new program is not mandatory—parents must volunteer to be part of the new program. To protect the student’s information, the database is kept separate from the school database and fingerprints are taken by public safety personnel.
