When it comes to getting the most out of your ID card system, there are a few simple rules of thumb for producing ID cards with long-lasting, high-quality color prints. These simple steps help ensure that your images, text and graphics will remain clear and crisp and will keep your printer running smoothly for years to come.

1. Keep the printhead and printing supplies clean – As an important mechanism in the printing process, the printhead needs to be clean at all times. Any dust and debris that collects on the printhead can cause streaks or marring on the card. You can gently clean the printhead using an alcohol swab or a lint-free cloth that comes in a printer cleaning kit. Similarly, printing supplies such as blank ID cards and printer ribbons also need to be kept clean as any dust or debris can interfere with the printing process and resulting print quality.
2. Use only the manufacturer recommended printer cleaning kits and ribbons – Don’t use any cleaning kits or printer ribbons except for those that are specified and recommended by the manufacturer. Deviating from what is recommended can end up hurting you printer’s performance in the long run.
3. Clean the printer at regular intervals – When you own a car, it’s crucial to get your oil changed regularly to help the car run properly. The same goes for regular cleanings for your ID card printer. Cleaning the inside of the printer helps remove any dust or debris and keeps all printing mechanisms running smoothly. Each printer manufacturer will have different recommendations about how often to clean the printer using the matching printer cleaning kit. Usually the printer should be cleaned every time a ribbon is changed. You can also use a can of compressed air to help remove dust and debris.
4. Always test print first – Print tests help save time and supplies by identifying any printing problems before you’ve gone through the effort of printing multiple cards. Print a test card first to determine if there are any color quality problems, streaks or marring.
