Public transit riders in Scotland’s largest city will enjoy the benefits of a smart card ticketing system on subways by 2013.

Glasgow’s future cashless payment system will require riders to simply tap their card against a reader while entering the turnstile for automatic subtraction of the journey’s cost. Card funds can also be used to purchase magazines and snacks at subway vendors. Riders can load credit on cards from anywhere through a web browser, or in person at a subway station.
The new system will offer convenient cashless payment in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Officials hope to eventually integrate the system with buses, trains and ferries throughout the metro area.
