The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has renewed an agreement that lets students and members of the campus community use their university ID cards to ride city buses for free. They call it the U-Pass program. This type of program is fairly common among colleges and universities, as it boosts bus ridership and lets students extend the functionality of their IDs.

This will be the second year of the U-Pass partnership between the University and the city of Green Bay. To cover the costs of unlimited bus service for university ID card holders, UW-Green Bay reimburses the city $35,000 from campus parking permit funds and student fees. The program started as a one-year pilot agreement in July 2008 and will continue through the upcoming school year. Green Bay Metro estimates that in the final six months of 2008, over 24,200 riders used the U-Pass program, and almost 12,000 have used their student IDs to ride the bus in the first four months of 2009.
