We’ve all had our clumsy moments with hotel key systems. Typically, you insert your key card in a reader, a green light comes on, and then you rapidly try to turn the handle to get in before it goes red. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that you’re most likely carrying luggage, or you’re racing back to the room in a wet and chilly panic, having just spent some time in the outdoor pool. Well, the times they are a changing. New card technology exists, and some hotels are taking their key card systems to the next level.

Thailand’s five-star Sukhumvit Bangkok Hotel, for instance, is set to open this October, and one of its many high-tech amenities is a key card system that uses proximity technology. Guests of the Sukhumvit will be able to gain access to their rooms with the simple waive of a proximity card. Now that’s luxury. Of course, this technology is a viable option for all in the hospitality industry, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself using proximity cards on your next family vacation, even if your hotel looks nothing like the astounding Sukhumvit.
