Maternity wards in Lubbock, TX have been aflutter lately – not with multiple births, Siamese twins or "ER"-style floods and firestorms, but with the threats of babynapping.

After a kidnapper posing as a nurse snatched little Michael Dawodu earlier this month, hospitals in northwest Texas have been tripping over themselves to establish the most secure healthcare ID card system to prevent any further disasters. This week, Cecelia Lynn Coy-Jones, a television reporter from Lubbock, was arrested after successfully entering two maternity wards in nearby Amarillo.

Coy-Jones, with camera in tow, was not wearing any forms of ID which indicated that she was allowed inside the maternity wards, both at Northwest Texas Hospital and nearby Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital. However, she snuck past security undetected and was only apprehended by authorities when she began to ask "odd" questions about child abduction security. Officials were notified and Ms. Coy-Jones was arrested on suspicion of attempted aggravated kidnapping.

Even after presenting a station ID card and business card, officials at both hospitals were suspicious of Ms. Coy-Jones’ intentions and pursued the arrest. Amarillo Police sergeant Randy Tenbrink summed up their arguments “We don’t know that’s who she really is, the hospital staff doesn’t know that’s who she really is,” adding “We didn’t see the humor in this test.”
