Like the rest of the world, we’ve been glued to our televisions for the past couple of weeks watching the 2012 London Olympics. And while we’ve been thrilled by the incredible, medal-worthy performances of the top athletes in the world, we were equally excited to learn that Olympic teams have been taking advantage of today’s ID card technology.

Three U.S. Olympic teams: diving, synchronized swimming, and tumbling gymnastics, are using ID cards that store athlete health information and medical records. The information can then be accessed on site if needed.

The ID card system was implemented after trainers for the teams were looking for a solution that would allow them to access the medical records on site at meets without having to re-create the information each time they traveled to an event.

Smart patient ID cards like those used for the Olympic Games are becoming more common these days as a way to streamline patient care and improve record accuracy.
