The Smart Park Program is a card-based fare payment system recently set up to replace outdated parking meters throughout Greenwich, Connecticut. With the new system, rather than fishing for coins to feed the meters, drivers carry a special smart card that can be used on new meters to pay for parking. The cards carry a certain amount of money and can be refilled once they run out.

Currently there are between 12,000 and 14,000 smart card parking meters in the city’s central business district. One of the early drawbacks of the system was that users could only refill their cards the Parking Services Department at Town Hall. Now there are two Greenwich locations open 24 hours a day where users can refill their cards, and there are plans to install more self-service reloading machines throughout the city.
The main benefit of the Smart Park Program is that drivers can carry a single card rather than a pile of quarters to pay for meters. Another plus is the electronic parking meters are easier to maintain than the older mechanical meters.
