About Wireless Security Systems

Wireless digital systems are digital security systems that consist of security cameras and recorders, but unlike other video security systems, they don’t rely on wires to transmit security footage from the camera (a digital/IP camera) to the recorder (a DVR or NVR). The greatest advantage to a wireless security system is its flexibility. Wireless security cameras can be configured in any layout, and can easily conform to changing security needs. Without wires, you can arrange cameras any way you’d like and change them around should you see it necessary. Types and security features of wireless security cameras vary widely, so it’s easy to find the wireless security system that works right for you. Some of the variables that wireless cameras have are:

Wireless Standard

  • 802.11G – By far the most popular and widely used wireless standard, 802.11G is used in many wireless security systems. However, it may cause some problems with delayed recordings and transmission due to excessive bandwidth use
  • MIMO (802.11N) – Short for “Multiple Input Multiple Output,” MIMO a new wireless standard that is much faster and has a longer range than traditional 802.11g. MIMO wireless depends on multiple antennas to receive and send signals, and because of the multiple inputs and outputs, these types of cameras are able to broadcast at a significantly higher speed. Many new wireless IP cameras like the Smartvue S4 use MIMO wireless because of this feature.

Recorder

  • DVR – DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) are recording devices which transfer digital footage from security cameras to a hard disk. Many people consider DVRs to be mainly used for recording television, but they are also widely used to record security footage. Digital footage stored on a DVR can be easily accessed, edited, and stored without risking damage or degradation of footage quality over time (unlike magnetic cassette tapes which are bulky and can lose footage quality).
  • NVR – NVRs (Network Video Recorders or Network DVRs), are recording devices like DVRs, except that they have the capability of transmitting footage over a network, making security footage accessible at any time from anywhere. Unlike DVRs, NVRs are able to act as a node on a network, like a printer or a fax machine. This means that the Network DVR can generate its own bandwidth and transmit security footage without causing a drag on the rest of a network’s operation (like an 802.11G would).
