Video Surveillance: Video Security in the News

  • The Munich Airport has implemented an IP video system to enhance security and comply with new European Union regulations which require all employees to undergo the same screening regimen as passengers. One of the fastest growing airports in the world, over 30 million people are expected to pass through the gates in 2006. The new video security system will be integrated in with the airport’s existing analog CCTV system, comprised of over 1800 CCTV cameras. The current central control room will accommodate both the new IP network cameras and the older cameras. Airport officials decided to integrate and adapt the IP cameras in with the analog cameras due to cost and future expansion. Read more at SecurityInfoWatch.com…
  • Four New York City area airports will be implementing “intelligent” video analytics security systems soon. Consisting of IP video cameras programmed to analyze and acknowledge specific behaviors, facial features, and other human movements, video analytics represents the most cutting-edge video security technology available. Officials plan to install the cameras around the perimeters of John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Teterboro, and Newark airports in the coming months. The new system is expected to cost upwards of $100 million, but Port Authority officials in New York believe it to be a worthy safeguard in response to increased threats. • An apartment complex in Lafayette, Louisiana, has installed security cameras around its premises. The city of Lafayette has ordered the complex, a hot bed for drug deals and illegal activities, to install the camera in order to reduce crime and make the complex a safer place for its residents. Two years after the court order from the city was filed, and after repeated threats to shut the complex down, the complex has installed the CCTV cameras. The Lafayette Police Department reported receiving over 1000 drug-related phone complaints, which they cite as a catalyst for the order to install the security system. Read more at KATC.com…
  • Police in Claremont, California have installed security cameras at a local cemetery in order to curb the rash of thefts that have occurred there over the past several months. The Oak Park cemetery has been a favorite for thieves as of late, as an abundance of valuable metals like bronze and copper are readily available from headstones, urns, and outdoor wiring. The thieves are also charged with vandalism, after uprooting several flower beds and overturning several headstones in their efforts to rob the cemetery. The police department is installing a wireless IP camera equipped with motion sensors, and upon detecting movement in the cemetery, the IP camera will turn on and the signal will be relayed to a dispatch at the police station, available for immediate review on a monitor. The police hope to use this security camera to identify possible suspects, but also hope that the camera prevents crimes from occurring in the future. Read more at Claremont-Courier.com…
  • A man in Washington State stole a camera from a CCTV system inside a Wendy’s restaurant in early November, 2006. However, he forgot to steal the tape to go along with the camera. Officials, now in pursuit of the burglar, have a high quality shot of the man’s face and have released the picture around the Tacoma area in hopes of identifying the thief.
