Home Single Security Camera Systems in Small Retail EnvironmentsVideo Surveillance
Small convenience stores and gift shops are a staple in big cities, airports and hotels. Travelers and city dwellers depend on these stores for sundries, coffee or a daily newspaper. While these stores are typically very small, merchandise arrangements and a single cashier performing customer service makes security of the store difficult at times. Many of these small retail stores use security cameras (in conjunction with other security products like strategically placed convex mirrors and door chimes) to ensure the safety of their customers and employees. Convenience stores and other quick-stop markets were some of the very first retail environments to adopt CCTV technology in the 1970s, as they have long been targets for petty thieves. In small retail stores, small security systems with a single security camera connected to a monitor under the cash register are commonplace, and have been proven effective in both deterring crime and identifying criminals who rob or commit other crimes on store property. However, many analog security cameras cannot zoom in or pan, which makes focusing on different areas difficult. These small stores, with limited space for merchandise and administrative needs, often re-use cassette tapes to reduce storage space and clutter. Since tapes have relatively short life spans, the quality of footage can sometimes be less than desired, and in extreme cases, can prevent law enforcement from taking proper action against criminals due to insufficient evidence. Tape recycling also means a less comprehensive security archive for security personnel and store management, who may need tapes to prove employee theft or analyze prior thefts in an effort to increase store security. The developments of digital cameras and wireless technology have made convenience store security systems more versatile and powerful. Although a security system with a single analog camera is relatively easy to set up in a small retail environment, a digital security camera is even simpler. Since many IP security cameras do not require wires, store managers and security personnel can manipulate camera setup in order to suit timely security needs. For example, a convenience store might have problems with minors stealing fireworks around the Fourth of July. The store manager could decide to shift the camera so it focuses more on the fireworks display during this time, and then move it back to its normal position after the holiday has passed. This flexibility helps maximize loss prevention and helps keep a store secure. A digital security camera produces high-quality images, often in color. IP cameras can zoom on any image without compromising quality, and most cameras are able to pan across images. This control over the camera allows the cashier or other observer to scan the store easily and discreetly from behind the register or in a back office. This also allows for a security camera operator to focus on a suspect or area of interest without having to move the camera itself. Along with high quality footage, easy installation and effortless operation, a digital security camera system is easy to maintain. Footage from IP cameras is recorded onto a server or DVR (digital video recorder), which take up a fraction of the space compared to cassettes. Digital footage also maintains quality indefinitely – which makes future review effortless. Digital and wireless IP security cameras also present the possibility of integration with other in-store security systems. This could be especially valuable to small operations like convenience and gift stores, many of which use computerized tills. In the future, a convenience store might integrate a security system with a digital camera into the till system, which would allow cashiers or managers to view footage directly from the register. This means that they could keep a closer eye on the store. The camera could also record items as they are scanned. Video analytics in a camera could compare filmed items to entries in the register and ensure that no fraud or shrinkage is taking place. These benefits could greatly help the bottom line of the store. Security at convenience stores has always been a gamble – petty thieves and wannabe gangsters see these stores as an easy way to make money or earn “street cred.” The introduction of security systems, especially the security camera at smaller stores, has made these crimes less appealing. Hopefully advances in technology will help make these stores more efficient and safer for their customers and employees. |
