Video Surveillance: RV Safety and Wireless Security Cameras

Road trips have been a popular form of vacationing for many years now. Recreational vehicles, or RVs, are large vehicles with space for sleeping, eating and entertainment. Recreational vehicles are popular for road trips, camping trips, and are sometimes used as homes on wheels. The term “RV” is a general term which can refer to any number of vehicles. Sizes of RVs range from small campers to large, luxurious motor homes.

Traditionally, road trips taken in cars are somewhat utilitarian. Passengers bring changes of clothes, light forms of entertainment (books, music, etc), some food, and other small miscellaneous possessions. However, in RV road trips, many more things are brought along. Many RVs have beds, kitchens, living areas, and large storage bays meant for holding items used on long road trips and extended camping trips. This means that there is much more stuff in the vehicle, including furniture and household items, clothing, and electronic items like televisions, stereos, DVD players, and more. Many people choose to tow cars or boats behind their RVs, or tie bikes and lawn furniture to the outside to be used on a camping trip. Cars and RVs play different roles in road trips. Cars are simply the mode of transportation – passengers use the car to get from one place to another. RVs, however, due to their large size and accommodations, mean that the RV becomes part of the vacation itself. Instead of staying in hotels and eating at restaurants, passengers eat from the RV kitchen and sleep in the vehicle overnight while parked at a rest stop or RV park. This difference between the car and RV brings a certain amount of risk to driving the vehicle. The potential amount of valuables inside an expensive looking motor home parked overnight at a rest stop makes it an easy target for theft. Motor home owners report stories of being robbed at rest stops and in parking lots at gun point, leaving them abandoned at the side of the road with nothing but their pajamas.

Many RV owners have begun to take precaution against theft and hijacking by installing small surveillance cameras on the back of their vehicles. These cameras are often wireless and digital, and transmit footage to a laptop computer or portable DVD player inside the RV. Many of these cameras come with infrared options, making it easy for RV owners to monitor their habitats day and night. Although some RV enthusiasts have CCTV cameras connected to small television monitors, or wired IP cameras, wireless security cameras are an easy and flexible option for maximizing security and protecting family and friends from harm.

A future possibility for revolutionizing RV security with security cameras is video analytics. Cameras enabled with analytics, or “intelligent” capabilities, will be able to recognize suspicious behavior independently. This will help make motor home security more efficient, as it allows RV owners to focus on entertainment and enjoying their vacation instead of constantly watching a monitor to ensure their safety. In the future, wireless security cameras with video analytics capabilities might also be able to remotely alert the owner of the RV of any dangers, which can help secure the vehicle while it’s not in use.

Another benefit of the wireless security camera is its ability to help the driver see behind the RV, where visibility is often difficult. Traditionally, backing up an RV or driving in heavy traffic requires two sets of eyes – one for driving, and one for standing behind the car or watching out a back window for any potential hazards. A wireless camera attached to the back of the vehicle accompanied by a monitor near the drivers seat allows the driver to back up and merge without fear of hitting another car. Wireless IP cameras provide high quality images, with much higher resolution and better color than their analog CCTV counterparts, affording the driver the best view out of the back of the vehicle.

Wireless IP cameras present many benefits to RV drivers – making them easier to drive, increasing security and peace of mind, and most of all, making the vacation better, easier and more fun.
