Video Surveillance: CCTV in the News
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) has been effective as a crime deterrent, but has also been useful in identifying and prosecuting many people who have committed crimes on camera. Here are some examples of recent events where CCTV has been used to convict people of crimes:
- In the UK, a young man has been convicting of breaking and entering after breaking into a neighbor’s home and stealing a mobile phone and a laptop. The homeowner had accidentally left her keys on top of a rabbit cage outside, the young man seized them and broke into the home. The homeowner has security cameras in her house and was able to identify the young man, who is her neighbor, from the CCTV video recorded during the break-in. The young man has a long history of petty crimes like break ins and robbery. After being identified from the security video, he was sentenced to 16 years in jail. Read more at LexisNexis...
- A man in the UK has been sentenced to jail time after CCTV video recorded him attempting to burgle a public CCTV camera. - CCTV video at a nursing home in a New York City borough has revealed massive accounts of patient mistreatment and falsification of records. Officials, after reviewing the security footage, have realized that many patients were not given their proper medications, or given their medications at the wrong time, and records were falsified to indicate that correct medical treatment had taken place. Nine doctors and nurses have been identified and charged with patient neglect and falsification of records, which is a felony in New York State. This is reportedly the third time that CCTV video has implicated a nursing home staff with life endangering neglect, and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is looking to enact tougher legislation to make sure that the elderly receive the proper care.
- In New Zealand, CCTV video has helped track down two men accused of mugging and raping a pair of Dutch vacationers. The young couple were abducted at gunpoint in a small seaside town, driven around for five hours, and dumped. The men were identified and charged in court through a combination of witness identification, security camera footage, and DNA analysis. The men have been charged and convicted of rape and kidnapping and will face sentencing soon. Read more at the New Zealand Herald
Security footage from a New Jersey bank has been used to successfully identify a young man who robbed the Wachovia branch. CCTV video revealed that Frank Lee, Jr., a 19 year old from the area, was the responsible party. Mr. Lee was subdued and charged with the robbery and making terrorist threats.
