Maintain a Healthy ID Card Printer

Owning an ID card printer is kind of like owning a sports car. Well, maybe not quite so glamorous, but the point is with both cars and ID card printers, routine maintenance is the key to ensuring peak performance.

One of the easiest ways to keep your printer in top shape is to clean it regularly. In order to do this, a special cleaning kit is required. It's important to note that the printers you see at AlphaCard.com each require a specific type of cleaning kit, so make sure you stock up on the correct kit for use with your printer model. Our Supply Locator tool is a great place to find which kit is right for your printer.

Most printer cleaning kits include materials for cleaning your printhead as well as the card feeder area. It's generally recommended that you clean your printer every time you change out the printer ribbon or cartridge. Depending on the type of card printer, this can be anywhere between 165 and 500 prints. By staying on top of printer maintenance, you can easily avoid expensive repair costs stemming from common difficulties such as card jams, broken ribbons, and streaky printing.

Fargo HDP5000

When it comes to power and versatility in an ID card printer, nothing quite compares to the Fargo HDP5000. This thing is built to handle virtually any application, from basic photo identification to high-volume, high-security card programs. What makes the printer so unique is its modular design. If your ID program grows to require additional functionality down the road, you can simply add an upgrade module. Available upgrade options include dual-sided printing, lamination, and a variety of sophisticated encoding technologies.

Another major attribute of the Fargo HDP5000 is its innovative high-definition printing process. High-definition printing gives you superior print quality, and even improves card durability. It's also the preferred print method for cards that feature embedded electronics. With the Fargo HDP5000, your images and text are first printed on a special reverse-transfer film, which is then applied to the surface of the card. This process not only leads to better looking cards, it also helps to extend the life of your printhead. Furthermore, unlike direct to card printers, the HDP5000 can create cards printed perfectly edge to edge.

QUESTION:
What's the best way to keep my PVC cards clean?

ANSWER:

The easiest way to keep cards clean is to keep them in the case they came in, or in an air-and-watertight container to protect them until printing. Inspect the cards before feeding them into the printer, and keep a dust cloth on hand to wipe off any dirt, dust, or debris that might appear.

Card storage temperatures can also be an issue - extremes of cold and heat can damage PVC cards, making them more brittle and susceptible to snapping. Keep blank card stock in a temperature controlled area, being careful not to let cards undergo drastic temperature changes.

ALPHA CARD COMPANY NEWS
Company News: Magicard Videos

Recently we started adding videos to the AlphaCard website and online store. Not simply for entertainment value, these videos are meant to help educate our customers on how to operate and maintain the ID card printers and systems we sell. We started out with a series of educational videos from Magicard. Take a look at some of the printers on our Magicard page and you'll be able to view videos covering topics such as how to clean or replace your printhead, how to change the rollers, and  even how to use Magicard's patented HoloKote secure watermark system. In most instances, these videos appear under the support tab of each printer's product overview page.

We'll be adding more videos in the coming months. It's all part of a bigger effort to make sure we're providing our customers with as much useful information and guidance as possible, both in the process of buying an ID card system or printer, and also in operating that system once it arrives.
