Design a great ID card

The key to designing a great ID card isn't a graphic design degree or a mastery of Photoshop™ - it's knowing what you want your card to convey. Design your ID card with its end use in mind - how it will be displayed, how it will be used, and what its purpose will be. Frequently used information, such as cardholder name and the photo, should go on the front of the card. Organization logos and other images can go on the front as well, but are not required.

Printing a double-sided card? The backs of cards are great places for less frequently used information - cardholder terms, any rules or regulations, hours of operation, and so on. Be sure to design around your encoded features (or visual features like Magicard HoloPatch), if you're using them. One of the best ways to design a great ID card? Alpha Card Software. The three different versions of our popular and powerful card software offer a wide range of features that can help any business design the perfect ID badge.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: MAGICARD OPERA
Magicard Opera
Just add your own PC and web-cam and you are ready to print edge-to-edge full color ID cards. So small and light (only 7lb / 3.2kg) it is easily portable. The Opera includes Magicard Wave HoloKote. HoloKote is an anti-copying watermark across the entire card surface, that becomes visible when the card is viewed at an angle. There is no additional cost involved in printing HoloKote cards with the Magicard Opera.

Reviews: Exactly what I needed

By Samdie from Kansas City ,Missouri
on 11/20/2007

I got this printer because I own a retail store and we were having problems with our paper gift certificates. They kept getting torn up, or people would try to forge them and write in more money, or change the date...so we decided on this printer because it included software. I got the basic version, which is fine for us...

Elementary school tries out high tech student ID cards.
While it's pretty much a given that student IDs on college campuses will serve a variety of functions beyond identification - for instance paying for meals, checking out library books, making photocopies, etc - elementary school ID programs are typically more simple.

FAQ OF THE MONTH
QUESTION:
When we print a card with blue text and rectangles they print purple, no matter how dark a blue we use. What do we do?

ANSWER:
  • The most common fix for this is to change the color matching in the driver. This works for most models of Fargo and Persona printers.
  • Go to START-->SETTINGS-->PRINTERS & FAXES, right click on the driver and select PRINTING PREFERENCES. Then go to the DEVICE OPTIONS tab and change the color matching from SYSTEM COLOR MANAGEMENT to MONITOR.
  • In some cases you may need to try the other color matching options.
  • In a worst case scenario, you may need to play with the RGB values of the source color. Rather than making it as dark a blue as you can, you want to make it a light blue, usually something like RGB 0, 70, 170. Even though that would appear light on your monitor, it should print closer to a normal blue.
