Napolitano proposing '3-in-1' driver's license
12:47 AM
IGov. Janet Napolitano said Friday she wants the state to create a "3-in-1" ID card that would serve as a driver's license, a border-crossing document and a proof of citizenship.
The license, which would be voluntary for Arizona residents and cost slightly more than a traditional driver's license, mirrors ID cards being developed in Washington and Vermont. It's meant to eventually comply with a federal ID reform program known as Real ID."My hope is that this project will lead to an effective permanent program that can be implemented nationwide," Napolitano said in a statement.

Will ID cards project learn from past disasters?
12:42 AM
None of the contract details published by the Home Office?s Identity and Passport Service (IPS) add much to the debate about whether the cards are necessary and what they will be used for in None of the contract details published by the Home Office?s Identity and Passport Service (IPS) add much to the debate about whether the cards are necessary and what they will be used for in practice.
But the way the commercial arrangements are being designed hints at the lessons learned from past IT disasters.
?ID cards are a really important piece of national infrastructure that require a large-scale, long-term business transformation programme,? said IPS commercial director Bill Crothers.
?We have looked extensively at positive and negative experiences to make sure that we will deliver to the right cost, to the right schedule, and with the right quality.?

The introduction of a national ID card scheme has moved a step closer with the government inviting potential
12:40 AM
Once a number of pre-qualified suppliers have emerged, the Identity and Passport Service will select companies and agencies to provide a range of skills, services and supplies.
The government says the ID cards programme will provide one mechanism by which people can prove their identities.
The plans to introduce ID cards have generally been welcomed by convenience store retailers, who believe it will aid them in the battle to prevent underage sales - a war which is likely to become tougher when it becomes illegal to sell tobacco to under-18s on October 1.

Paper calls for local ID cards
12:40 AM
A think tank has argued that local authority "entitlement cards" could be more practical than the National Id Card
New Local Government Network (NLGN) has published a pamphlet (pdf) on the subject, entitlesLocal Identity: The role of local entitlement cards in public service delivery.
It says local cards could prove to be cheaper, quicker, and provide a better safeguard of identity than the national scheme. It would also be more relevant to most needs as local government provides about 80 per cent of public services.
Victoria Barbary, author of the report, told GC News a national framework for the cards could be adopted to provide some consistency in their look, how they are used and the information procedures, and likened it to the
framework provided by Visa and MasterCard for companies that issue credit cards

Parish council launches ID card scheme
1:40 AM
FEW people might think of impersonating local politicians - but in one Suffolk village, council members are taking no chances and arming themselves with identity cards.
Those who came up with the novel idea of equipping Great Cornard Parish Council with ID cards believe they will prevent con artists being able to claim they are councillors and will give badged council members more confidence in dealing with members of the public. The idea came about because of fears that even mundane parish council tasks - such as checking that grass has been cut in the public park - can arouse public suspicion.

New cards carry debit feature
1:34 AM
After two false starts, two cards have finally become one to make life easier on Truman students.Truman and U.S. Bank have come together to make Truman ID cards more useful to students by having them double as a debit card and an ID card. The switch to the new ID cards was to originally take
place in early January 2007, but two batches of faulty cardstock and too little time to convert equipment caused a postponement of the exchange.
Roberta Santee, the branch manager of the McPherson Street U.S. Bank, said the students who opt for the debit card feature most likely will be incoming freshmen.
