Department Encourages ID Cards for Kids
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is encouraging parents to bring their children 5 and older to the Lake Wales Driver License Office, at 692 SR 60 W., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to get a Florida Identification Card.
The cards hold a current digital photo and vital information, which also will be entered into an emergency database available only to law enforcement as part of the DHSMV's emergency contact information system, a voluntary database for Floridians to provide contacts in case something happens to them. The cost of an original ID card is $3, and $10 for a replacement card. Parents will need to bring an original birth certificate and proof of a Social Security number for each child. No hotocopies will be accepted. Full Article fromTheledger.com.

Make ID cards local, says think-tank
It would be cheaper, more secure and better for citizens if identity cards were run locally rather than nationally, a think-tank has argued.
The New Local Government Network (NLGN) has released a white paper suggesting local councils create a local ID card or "entitlement" card to be used for accessing public services, authenticating identity and paying for small purchases. Such a card could take the place of the embattled national identity card scheme, for less money while offering better ID safeguards, the report argued. Full Article fromItpro.co.uk.

Elephants in India Get ID Cards
Wildlife groups have created individual photo ID cards for wild elephants in southern India to help track the effects of poaching, conservationists said Thursday.
By being able to specifically identify animals, researchers get a better idea of elephant numbers and movements in an area. It can also help law enforcement in the event that an elephant carcass is discovered, said the New-York based Wildlife Conservation Society, which is working with several Indian groups on the effort. ID Idea Catches On
New Haven's new immigrant-friendly ID card may inspire communities across the country to follow suit.
A New York City councilman has already introduced a proposal to replicate the New Haven experiment; close to half his colleagues signed on as co-sponsors. Miami-Dade County is looking at a similar proposal. Meanwhile, activists or officials from California, Nevada, Kentucky, Maryland, Wisconsin and Arizona have contacted New Haven's City Hall for more information on the plan to explore launching similar programs, according to Community Services Director Kica Matos, who designed the program. Robbinsdale students now required to wear ID badges
When students return to school next month, some will be sporting more than the latest fashions -- in the Robbinsdale School District, their back-to-school wardrobes will include ID badges.
Robbinsdale school board members adopted the policy earlier this summer. The suburban district's actions come in the wake of thefts, fights and other disturbances in recent years at Robbinsdale Cooper, in New Hope, and intruder incidents at Robbinsdale Armstrong, in Plymouth. ID cards: contracts on offer
The department said the tender will pave the way for a framework agreement, creating a list of prequalified suppliers with a set of agreed contract terms.
It will select a small group of the best IT suppliers in the market, who will work with the IPS and its partner agencies to deliver capabilities for the scheme. The two largest tenders, each for about £500m, will cover the identity database and handling of applications and enrolment. The provision of desktop services for the IPS is also included in the current NIS (National Identity Scheme) Strategic Supplier Framework. All other elements of the ID programme, including ID cards, are described as "potential projects" and are subject to both change and approval.Aside from leading IT suppliers, the 10-year procurement programme will turn the heads of niche IT firms, such as card manufacturers, the hi-tech group Intellect reportedly said on Friday. UK May Scrap ID Cards
U.K.'s Conservative Party has reiterated that it will scrap the government's #5.3 billion (US$10.8 billion) ID cards scheme as ministers announced that the delayed procurement for the program had finally begun.
A tender notice for the National Identity Scheme (NIS) strategic supplier framework has now been published, covering most of the scheme's requirements. But speaking after the announcement, shadow home secretary David Davis, said: "This project will do nothing to improve our security. In fact independent experts like Microsoft and the London School of Economics have pointed out that it could well make our security worse while costing the tax payer #20 billion in the process.
