Lifetime ID card draws criticism / No expiration date leaves ex-driver document invalid after 6 months
11:27 PM
The NPA has discussed introducing a system to set an expiration date and renew the certificate, or reissue certificates when holders change address. But it abandoned its plans after concluding the certificate's purpose was, in principle, to verify an
individual's driving record, and its original purpose would be altered if the information it carried was altered. Following the enactment in April of a law that prevents the transfer of profits earned via crime, the law to confirm the identity of a bank account holder under the Financial Services Agency will be incorporated into the former, before being abrogated by April 2008.But there is scant debate in the NPA as to how to handle the certificate, as some insist it would be difficult to ease conditions in light of the current situation in which the counterfeiting of ID cards is increasing.

Experts address security concerns
11:27 PM
Making synagogue staff and visitors wear ID badges creates a standard for recognizing people who are out of place, he added, noting that monitoring who enters the building is an important part of maintaining security.Israelis are notorious for rigorous security checks at El Al terminals, he said, pointing out that while some think the Israeli guards are engaging in racial profiling, they are instead profiling behavior. Community members should learn from
this and watch the behavior of people in and around their institutions, he added.
"If something looks out of place, say something," Neuer said.

Bamford: ID cards must keep public confidence
11:27 PM
The government should seek to retain public confidence in its controversial ID card scheme by placing privacy issues at the heart of its technology requirements, the assistant information commissioner has claimed.Jonathan Bamford said at a Kable identity management conference yesterday that this could both improve the effectiveness of the scheme and show the public the government cares about data protection issues. He added that systems should be built where data protection compliance can be designed in, rather than being tacked on 'as an afterthought'.'Those across central government in charge of procurement of large IT projects need to specify the fact that they care about people's privacy,' Mr Bamford commented.

MCSA to Issue ID Cards to Elderly
10:22 PM
This drive to provide identity cards was entrusted to the Mangalore Senior Citizens Association (MCSA) with its motto ?By the elderly for the elderly?, and it drew plenty of responses from the residents.
The MCSA first opened a small cell near P V S Circle and since June 18 has distributed 1,700 applications and so far has received 980 applications. After doing the necessary screening the association will soon issue an error-free ID card for the elderly.
According to M J Hegde, president of MCSA and secretary K Ramesh Rao the first phase of distribution of ID cards would end, when the applications touches the 2000 mark and the second round of distribution would start once the ID cards are ready.
Ramesh Rao further stated that he hoped to get the first batch of ID cards released by the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Maheshwar Rao.
Since the elderly citizens felt that the exercise had taken over their leisure time, stalling work, it was decided that in the second round they would be issuing cards three times a week. Further the members felt that many people from a particular community had enrolled for the facility. So they hoped that in the next round of distribution of ID cards by word of mouth members of other communities would also register for ID cards.

Immigrants Are Not The Enemy
10:21 PM
Last month, my neighborhood in New Haven had the air of Fallujah. It was the day after federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided the town's Latino enclave and rounded up more than 30 people. The streets were quiet. The local clinic was deserted, and many residents, afraid to leave home, lived on eggs and canned goods and lurked by their windows.
The raid was the federal government's retaliation against the mayor's decision to issue municipal ID cards to undocumented workers. The cards would let them open bank accounts and stop carrying large amounts of cash, which makes them robbery targets. Two days after the mayor's announcement, the ICE men charged in, invaded homes and apartments at dawn, and did not even pause to ask the names of those they herded into buses in handcuffs.
Unlike many of my New Haven neighbors, I lived through the early years of the Iran-Iraq war and supported President George W. Bush's notion that the world would be a better place without Saddam. By virtue of belonging to the Iranian diaspora, some members of which have been assassinated, I knew long before 9/11 that dangerous outsiders were living among us. As such, I welcomed the invention of the Department of Homeland Security to root out men who wanted to learn to fly but not land.
