NH Signs Bill That Rejects Federal Real ID
10:19 PM
"New Hampshire is part of a trend to oppose the federal Real ID act. The governor this week signed a bill that forbids state agencies from complying with the controversial federal regulation. The Real ID law, first passed by Congress in 2005, currently requires that all state driver's licenses and other identification cards include a digital photograph and a bar code that can be scanned by electronic readers. Such a federally approved ID card or document would be required for people entering a federal building, nuclear power plant and commercial airplane. The New Hampshire bill, which labeled the Real ID Act as "contrary and repugnant" to the New Hampshire and U.S. Constitutions, was passed in the state Senate by a 24-0 vote in late May."

I screen, you screen
10:16 PM
Lawmakers want to require screenings for ice cream truck drivers, including background checks that would identify sex offenders and prohibit them from working with children. They'd get ID badges and have to register with the state. Does anybody else see a problem with this? Of course, I think it's important to keep children safe from sex predators. But a few things about legislation like this bother me. No. 1, it's going to cost money to run background checks and issue ID cards to ice cream vendors, so either the state is going to have to go deeper in debt or charge these icre cream vendors fees to register.
Then, does anybody think it's a shame that Illinois lawmakers craft laws to make it LOOK like they're getting something done when the legislative branch is actually mired in gridlock over the really important issues like the budget, which includes funding for education, transportation, health care, pensions, etc.

12,000 ID cards in a month
4:07 AM
With only the gewogs of Yangneer, Thrimshing and Udzorong left, the ID processing for the dzongkhag is expected to be completed by July 8, according to civil registration and census officials. ?For the remaining 18 dzongkhags it would not be as time consuming as it was for Trashigang,? said the supervisor of the second round team, Kuenzang Dechen. ?Their coverage was better than that of Trashigang in the first round.?Given the size of population Trashigang was allocated five weeks in the second round with the deadline set for July 4. This was extended to July 8 so that students on summer break could also process for the ID cards. The rest of the students from remaining 18 dzongkhags, Kuenzang Dechen said, could have new ID cards processed at the census and civil registry head quarter in Thimphu.

Brown commits to ID cards
4:04 AM
In his first prime minister's questions since assuming the leadership, Mr Brown urged MPs across the House to back the government's anti-terror proposals.
He voluntarily confirmed that he would continue to push for ID cards as the backbone of any anti-terror policy. There had been quiet speculation the new prime minister would abandon his predecessor's controversial plans for a national identity database and ID cards. Instead, he called on MPs across the house to approve planned ID legislation, amid repeated calls for a unified response to terror. It is "vitally important" the "message is sent out to rest of the world that we will stand strong, steadfast and united in the face of terror," the prime minister said.

New Media, Old Politics and the Blogger in the Middle
12:51 AM
Mr. Lassiter ? who has never applied for press credentials from the New Jersey Press Association ? said he was told by the police that he did not qualify for an identification card because Blue Jersey did not have an office here. He can enter the State House to conduct his reporting, he said, but instead of circumventing
security and metal detectors with an official ID, he must be issued a visitor?s ID badge. The new crop of blogger-reporters ? they have also cropped up at the capitols in California, Tennessee and Georgia, among other states ? have made legislators and journalists wary. Some of them do not consider bloggers
worthy of credentials.?A lot of these guys are fairly partisan, so I have concerns about opening the full membership to people who are not in a traditional sense objective reporters,? John L. Micek, the president of the Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents? Association, told State Legislatures magazine in January.

Delay for municipal ID cards
12:36 AM
Mayor DeStefano's office says there is a glitch in New Haven's controversial municipal ID program.
A spokesperson says that a computer problem is delaying the plans to issue the cards to illegal immigrants. The city had hoped to begin issuing the ID cards this week, but it doesn't look like they will be available until the end of the month. Once up and running, the ID program will be privately funded for the first year.
