New Haven Proposes ID Cards For Immigrants
Backers say the plan could serve as a model for dealing with the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. But Ted Pechinski, an opponent of illegal immigration who is organizing a demonstration against the proposal next month, said ID cards would encourage more illegal immigration.?I think it's awful,? said Pechinski, who lives in North Branford. ?It's going to attract many more illegals to New Haven. The overflow will go to the surrounding towns. Having this ID says you're welcome here. We will give you all the protection you need, even though you are illegal.?Michael Wishnie, a Yale law professor who has researched the proposal, said it is far fetched to think immigrants will travel thousands of miles across an international border to get a New Haven ID card that does not change their immigration status.?I think it's a very wise, practical policy and I think it's on sound legal footing,? Wishnie said.Cities have long issued cards for programs such as access to beaches, but officials say new Haven would be the first to issue an all-purpose municipal ID card for residents, including undocumented immigrants. The card also would have a debit component for residents to use for parking meters and city services.A finance committee of the Board of Aldermen approved the plan Thursday night. The full board is expected to take up the proposal next month.

School ID Badges Proposed
Students at Dover High School in York County may soon have a new accessory to wear to class: ID badges. It's the latest security proposal in front of the Dover School Board.
Administrators have led a district wide security upgrade after a year full of bomb and gun threats. Twenty-six cameras were added in and around the schools, along with new locks and extra lighting in parking lots. Many think the ID badges would be another layer of security that would keep unwanted visitors out. "I think it's a good idea, it helps the teachers know who belongs there and who doesn't belong there," said Kim Hess a Dover parent. Full Article from Whptv.com.

Anne Arundel Co. Educators Adopt Academic Goals
Board members passed a plan Wednesday night to improve county students' academic performance while reducing suspensions and increasing safety. The six-page plan requires 80 percent of high school students to take at least one advanced placement course by 2011. That number is currently at 49 percent.
Also, 50 percent of third-through eighth-graders taking the Maryland School Assessment would have to make an advanced level score. Last June, that percentage was 32 percent. Referrals, suspensions and expulsions would have to drop by 20 percent according to the plan. All staff would be required to wear ID badges. And new and renovated schools must have the latest security principles by 2011. Full Article from Wjz.com.

You call this security? Area Army bases lax
"As a result of the Fort Dix incident, every base around the country - certainly those in metropolitan areas - should review their security and most likely increase it," Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.) told the Daily News.At Fort Hamilton, visitors who drive up to the main entrance encounter concrete barriers and gun-toting soldiers in fatigues who scrutinize ID badges and pop open trunks.
But that's only a deterrent to those using the front door to the 49-acre campus, which abuts the campus of Poly Prep Country Day School, a Veterans Administration hospital and Dyker Beach Park. The rest of the grounds - with the exception of a guard house at the rear of the base - are ringed simply by a fence. Some, but not all, of it is topped by barbed wire. Full Article from Nydailynews.com.
