DHS Privacy Committee Opposes Real ID Bill
States are not mandated to issue Real ID cards. However individuals would need Real ID-compliant cards for air travel or for getting into federal buildings such as courthouses and nuclear facilities or for receiving federal benefits. Under the act, all state driver's license databases would be linked with each other in one system with shared access. The proposal to issue Real ID cards has provoked a firestorm of protest from several quarters. Much of the concern stems from fears that the card would become a de facto national ID system that would be hard to manage and even harder to secure. There are also fears that the cards could eventually be used for a wide set of purposes -- including surveillance by the U.S. government

Principal says standardized attire changes attitudes
Students must also wear their official ID badges on a lanyard around their neck. The bar-coded badges serve several purposes; they not only serve as identification but are used to pay for school lunches and to check out library books. Parents can fund the child's account using the online service PayPal, and can add money instantly or check their balance at any time.
"Spirit shirts," which are any collared shirt decorated with the school's name or colors, are allowed, and spirit T-shirts are allowed on special occasions. No open-toed shoes are allowed, although that policy may be re-considered. Like Central, Cleveland allows special "dress-down" days as fund-raisers and for special occasions. Also, students who earn a T-shirt from the Jostens "Renaissance" recognition program are allowed to wear it any day, and as the school year winds down seniors are allowed to wear their official commemorative class T-shirt. Port Workers Won't Need 2nd ID Under Security Bill
WASHINGTON - Workers at the Port of Tampa and other Florida seaports won't be forced to obtain a new federal ID badge, at least right away, under an amendment passed by the U.S. House on Wednesday as part of a homeland security bill.Instead, federal officials first would have to fix the problems that have prevented attempts to integrate that new card's technology with a Florida port security-access system that already is in place. Florida officials argue their card is better and want it integrated into - not replaced by - the federal system. They have no intention of getting rid of the state card, and say port workers within the state should not be required to have both. The amendment was attached by Rep. Kathy Castor to a homeland security authorization bill that now heads to the Senate.

Vanguard, IRIS and DIS Unveil Printer-Encoders for EPC ID Car
All too frequently, Cochran explains, a card printed in one machine can be confused with another card when its tag is encoded. Consequently, a card's tag might be encoded with one person's information, while the outside of the card might be printed with another individual's data. No such concern exists, however, with the printer developed by the three companies.
DIS manufactures two version of the EDIsecure XID printer?the 570i, designed for higher image quality, and the 580i, built for higher printing speed. Both models are already on the market for use in printing ID cards. To create versions that could be utilized to encode RFID cards, DIS and IRIS integrated a ThingMagic UHF RFID EPC Gen 2 interrogator into both printers. IRIS also wrote the custom plug-in software. Although the new printer-encoders were developed for the border-crossing application, they could be used for a variety of other applications as well, Cochran says. These include ski slopes, universities or events at which a large number of people need to be identified quickly. Full Article from Rfidjournal.com.

Federal anti-terrorism program provokes outrage
BOSTON? A new federal antiterrorism program, aimed at setting up nationally linked computer databases in every state with information on personal ID cards and higher-security driver?s licenses, is running into opposition from states, including Massachusetts. Officials here say it would be expensive for the state, inconvenient for residents, may fail to improve security and would launch a black market for fake IDs.The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 and signed by President Bush, requires all U.S. residents without a passport to obtain a new state-issued type of driver?s license or ID card in order to board commercial airplanes, enter federal buildings, get Social Security benefits or get into other federal government programs, starting next May. Because residents of states that do not adopt the new high security licenses would be barred from boarding airplanes or accessing government programs, the controversy is developing into a major state-federal standoff. The act?s draft comment period ends Tuesday.
