ThingMagic and IRIS Introduce World's First UHF RFID ID Badge Printer
10:29 PM
ThingMagic, Inc. (www.thingmagic.com), a leading developer of RFID technology, announced that its Mercury5e embedded reader module has been added to EDIsecure XID 570i and 580i Re-transfer Card Printers, sold and supported nationwide by The IRIS Companies (www.irisltd.com). As a result, IRIS customers can quickly print color UHF RFID ID badges for secure building and office entry, personnel tracking for safety, and other workplace and access applications.
"Most RFID-enabled ID badge systems use the close proximity UF standard, which requires users to almost touch a badge to a low range RFID reader. By enabling UHF RFID badges, personnel need only wear a badge on a lanyard, or attached it to a pocket, in order to be read by an RFID reader within a few yards," said Kevin Ashton, VP marketing for ThingMagic. "As best as we can determine, this is the first instance of UHF RFID being applied to ID badges. This makes the system easier to use, and more accurate overall, since it doesn't rely on users always almost touching a low range UF reader. We expect strong demand for such an agile RFID printer, and continue to work with IRIS on workplace deployments and applications."

Local schools will tighten security
10:29 PM
EAGLE COUNTY ? Your typical school could have a few dozen teachers, janitors, librarians, parents, lunch ladies and repair men walking through the halls on any given day. It?s hard to know every one of those faces though, says Carol Johnson, who has two kids at Edwards Elementary. She?s in favor of some new security measures the school district is considering to keep tabs on all the people coming in and out of our schools.?I think my kids are really safe in school, but there are a lot of bizarre things going on out there, so the more we can do, the better,? Johnson said.
One action will be requiring all staffers, from teachers to maintenance men, to wear district ID badges at all times.

High schoolers to wear badges
10:31 PM
Albany -- When Dougherty County High School students return from spring break, they'll be required to wear new ID badges during the school day. When students in grades 9 through 12 return to school April 9th, they will be issued a photo identification badge to be worn at all times while at school. The Dougherty County Schools say it's a priority to create a safe school environment. "Help us to make sure there are no outside people coming in on campus, if we have badges then we know these are our students and that they belong here and if somebody doesn't have a badge then we'll question that person," says Deputy Superintendent Carlos Keith, Sr.

CRMC adopts new policy
10:31 PM
Cullman Regional Medical Center has changed its emergency room visitation policy in hopes of making what can be a traumatic experience for patients and family members easier to handle. The changes were explained by Belinda Wilks, CRMC?s director of emergency services, at Tuesday night?s board meeting.Wilks said she heard many complaints about the old system in which patients were only allowed one visitor at a time, and guests were only allowed to enter at the top of the hour and on the half hour. If, for example, the visitor stepped outside at 12:05 to make a phone call ? a common occurrence since cell phone use is not allowed in the ER ? they were not allowed to return until 12:30.While the number of visitors will still be limited to reduce congestion in the ER, Wilks said the changes should make patients and family member happier.?Visitation remains with one visitor at the bedside because of space and privacy issues, but now we?re allowing that one visitor to come and go at any time,? she said.New visitor I.D. badges allow hospital staff to keep track of who the registered visitors are. Wilks said the badges have been in use for several weeks.?The whole idea is we?re trying to address the comments and the need of our patients in our community,? Wilks said. ?I want to address those concerns they have while still keeping the department safe, and I think this will accomplish both.?

MIDDAY BUSINESS REPORT: Government to take another shot at Wittig, Lake
10:30 PM
The tragedy of 9-11 prompted more workplaces to think more about security. I.D. badges. Surveillance cameras. Security guards. Limited access. But most places where people work day in and day out are not all that secure. They're open to the public. Yesterday's random shopping mall shootings in Kansas City are a case in point.Exactly what could be done to prevent senseless gunfire from an unhinged person in a public place? In a case like this, not much. But what can be done is safety and security training for workers in any location.
News accounts told of a store manager who pulled the security gates across his store front when gunfire was heard. Was he trained to do that or was he quick-thinking? Another store clerk pulled shoppers into a storeroom that could be locked. Trained or fast on her feet? For more on this topic and others, read Diane Stafford's Workspace blog at
