Mexican residents endure long line for ID cards
10:30 PM
Julio C. Hurta, Mexican consul of Chicago, said the Mexican identification card is extremely useful for people living outside Mexico.?The matricula helps people identify themselves, but it doesn?t solve anything related to immigration ? to be legal or illegal or to stay in this country,? he said. ?It helps people in their daily lives to obtain bank accounts, just like the passports help people when traveling.?To obtain an ID card, officials said, the proper documentation is crucial ? an official copy of their birth certificate is a must; other documents include a Mexican voter?s registration card, a marriage license or a Mexican driver?s license. Applicants must be 18 years or older and children must be accompanied by a parent. Parents must bring a child?s vaccination and school records. They must also bring cash. A Mexican identification card is $27 and valid for five years; a passport is $84 for five years.
Hurta?s office covers counties in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, serving more than 25,000 people in an average eight-month period. This weekend alone, 900 passports and identification card requests will be processed by the mobile office.
The office is only in town through Sunday, with a maximum of 300 people being served daily, so organizers are encouraging residents to arrive early and come prepared with proper documentation.?There were 500 people waiting outside when the doors opened (Thursday),? said Julio Salgado, Red Cross workplace coordinator. ?I felt bad.?

LHS Stepping Up Enforcement On School Rules
10:27 PM
Longview High School is cracking down on students who don't follow school rules, according to their next principal. In breakout sessions Tuesday, James Brewer announced a zero tolerance policy for students who don't follow the school's code of conduct. He says they have been warned enough times when it comes to tucking in their shirts, wearing their ID badges, and arriving to class on time. Now, they'll automatically be given an in-school suspension with no more warnings."The students have been here all year, they know they're supposed to tuck their shirts in and we have some students that have been doing that and following the rules, but we have some students that of course if you don't stay on them, they won't do it so we're just going to try as a group here as a team to make sure all students following the rules,"

PUBLIC SAFETY: Secure as we can be
10:18 PM
?You can have video, locked doors, ID badges and more technological measures, but ultimately the real safety of a building comes from the commitment of the people in the community,? he said. ?It comes from the willingness of people to report (alarming) behavior ? and the willingness of people in positions of authority to follow up. Two eyes and two ears are more important than anything you can invest in technology-wise.?going too far?Dr. Donna Levin, a professor of psychology at Hilbert College, would agree with the eyes-and-ears approach, but she also worries it can go too far.In the aftermath of a school shooting spree, she said, high school and college students tend to be ?much more attentive to other students who give off signals of rage or depression. Kids are going to be super-vigilant. Teachers are going to be super-vigilant.?
