McNairy Co. Deputies beef up security for Winkler trial
10:23 PM
McNairy County Deputies, who have never even spoken to the media, told photographers to move away. It was a real clue something involving security had happened and suddenly security was increased at the justice center. The court called in state troopers to stand in front of the justice center and outside the court people going into the courtroom had to go through electronic surveillance and the media had to wear ID badges to get inside the courtroom.State troopers stood in front of the McNairy county justice center. Court spokesperson Sue Allison said the added security came after the court received a phone call from another TN county."Apparently he was angry and felt the prosecution's case wasn't being presented with as much gusto as he'd like," says Allison.

Bomb scare tests safety measures
10:23 PM
Like many area high schools, Flowery Branch has a security guard checking on visitors and their business to the school and a full-time sheriff's deputy walking the halls and interacting with students.Gainesville High started this school year requiring students to wearID badges, a move that paid off quickly.Early in the year, several students reported to administrators that they had noticed three strangers in the cafeteria table without the badges. A school resource officer later stopped the three inside the high school. A subsequent search of their car turned up two knives and a pair of baseball bats, one inscribed with the gang's logo, police said at the time. Will Schofield, superintendent of Hall County schools, said the district is looking at adding some "high-quality surveillance equipment," including cameras, at its schools. But he doesn't favor more drastic measures employed by some, mostly urban, schools, such as having students walk through metal detectors."We want to continue to cultivate an open, friendly environment while taking advantage of all the technology we can," Schofield said.

Clinton teacher resigns, drops appeal in ID badge policy case
10:23 PM
Steve Walters was fired in March by the Clinton Community Schools Board of Education after he refused to follow a policy requiring staff members to wear ID badges.

Daily Telegram Staff Writer
CLINTON ? Rather than face possibly returning to work only to run into the same policy he opposed, a Clinton High School teacher opted to resign late last month.
Steve Walters was fired in March by the Clinton Community Schools Board of Education after he refused to follow a policy requiring staff members to wear identification badges. The school board fired him on March 6, and he vowed to appeal the dismissal.
Jim Berryman, Uniserv director for the Michigan Education Association, said Tuesday that Walters submitted a resignation letter to the school district on March 27 and on April 5 withdrew his appeal of the dismissal charges to the Michigan State teacher Tenure Commission.

All the pretty badges
10:24 PM
Westchester County legislators and their expanding staff recently began sporting special county ID badges that distinguish them from other county employees.Traditional county building access badges are mostly white with a bluish-green stripe. They bear the user?s name, department and the county?s main Web site, westchestergov.com. The new legislative badges have orange and navy stripes, and an orange-and-navy legislative seal. The Web site they trumpet is www.westchesterlegislators.com.Board Chairman William Ryan, D-White Plains, said the badges are ?all in line with the independent nature of the legislature.?
?We?re not under the operation of the county executive,? he said. ?We are separate, distinct, and that?s the whole point we?re trying to make.?
Of course, one could make the same argument for the district attorney?s office or county clerk?s office, both of which continue to use the traditional badge style.

Secret paper reveals Labour?s ID card lies
12:12 AM
LONDON: The government faces damaging claims of misleading voters over ID cards after documents revealed it always planned to make the controversial scheme compulsory.
Whitehall papers, which the government has fought for two years to suppress, disclose that Labour intended to force the public to sign up to the programme.
They appear to contradict commitments given by Labour in its 2005 election manifesto, which pledged that the cards, and the national identity register containing people?s names, addresses, fingerprints and other information, would be ?on a voluntary basis?.The briefing notes, released under the Freedom Of Information Act, show that civil servants had already been told ID cards would be compulsory for all by 2014.Opposition MPs said the papers proved the government had ?purposely set out to mislead the public and politicians about their plans?.
The department for work and pension?s (DWP) ?ID Fraud Benefit Profile? was produced in October 2004 and was designed to show how the project would cut benefit fraud.

?Millions to rebel? over ID cards
12:20 AM
The government is predicting that some 15m people will revolt against Tony Blair?s controversial ID card scheme by refusing to produce the new cards or provide personal data on demand. The forecast is made in documents released by the Home Office under the Freedom of Information Act. The papers show ministers expect national protests similar to the poll tax rebellions of the Thatcher era, with millions prepared to risk criminal prosecution. Opposition MPs said the new documents proved their case that the programme would never work. David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: ?This will cripple the system. Fifteen million is a massive number. What the Home Office is accepting in private, but refuses to accept in public, is that a massive number of ordinary law-abiding citizens simply will not go along with their scheme.?
