Feds to Boost Air Worker Checks After Finding Guns, Drugs on Plane
1:44 AM
The pending announcement follows the arrest this week of two Comair baggage handlers for allegedly carrying a duffel bag laden with 14 guns and eight pounds of marijuana on a Delta Airlines flight from Orlando, Fla., to San Juan, P.R. According to court documents, the two employees used their employee uniforms and airport identification badges to pass by screeners and enter high-security areas. The incident highlights a loophole that allows 800,000 airport food and support workers to get ID badges that allow them to bypass screening while American airport passengers undergo the most rigorous screening ever that, most recently, requires them to remove shoes and have liquids and gels over a few ounces confiscated. That loophole would be closed under a bill offered in Congress by Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., on Thursday. The bill would require airports to screen all workers with access to secure areas to the same degree that passengers are screened.

New visitor ID system looks to make hospital safer
1:42 AM
New technology will allow UK medical center officials to create instant photo ID badges for after-hours visitors, helping to keep the hospital complex more secure. The new Fast Pass System, which went into effect last month, scans driver's licenses and then stores all relevant information. It transfers the visitor's name, photo, number of the room they are visiting, and the date onto the badge. It's a more efficient system for the security staff to check in visitors, said Capt. Paul Grant of UK Police, who is in charge of UK Hospital and Medical Center Security. The new practice is not in reaction to any security problems at the hospital, but rather "just a better way to manage visitors," he said.

Biometrics in ID Cards?
1:36 AM
The survey has some contradictions. For example, 68 percent of the respondents believe that biometrics added to identity documents will make it harder for thieves to engage in identity theft, but 67 percent think that "criminals will find a way around the technology."Say what? The real problem with adding biometrics to identity documents isn't that crooks will find a way around the technology, but that crooks will get identity documents that have your name but their biometrics. If you think identity theft is bad now, just imagine how bad it will be when the crook's fake identity is verified through the use of fingerprints or iris scans:"Yes, your honor, we know that Mary Johnson was there, because she presented her identity card and had her iris scanned. That's what the computer says, and the biometric backed it up.""Is the woman in the defendant's chair the same woman who presented the ID card?"

Teacher?s dismissal approved, will be appealed
1:38 AM
At a special meeting attended by about 50 people, the board unanimously approved the charges for Walters? alleged insubordination for refusing to wear an identification badge. In the charges, Superintendent David Pray said Walters received two written reprimands and one-day and two-day suspensions without pay leading up to the decision to file dismissal charges. He is currently suspended with pay and has continued to refuse to wear an ID badge. ?Under the circumstances, such continuing and blatant refusal on the part of Mr. Walters to comply with a reasonable directive to wear the identification badge constitutes inexcusable gross insubordination and unprofessional conduct,? Pray wrote in the memorandum to the board of education that details the charges. ?Mr. Walters? gross insubordination and unprofessional conduct is totally inappropriate and cannot be tolerated or condoned.?Pray wrote that Walters? ?notorious misconduct? has had an adverse affect on the district and ?is detrimental to the interests, safety and welfare of students, parents, staff and community.?

Road to election to be lit in 2-3 weeks
1:32 AM
In response to a High Court (HC) ruling suspending all polls for three months since Jan 29, the date of the ruling, the EC will inform a HC division bench today about its plans to introduce voter ID cards, sources said adding that the EC Secretariat yesterday sent to the attorney general's office a written statement to be placed before the court this morning. CEC ATM Shamsul Huda yesterday afternoon told a BNP delegation that the EC plans to inform the nation about its roadmap for the next parliamentary election, BNP Vice-chairman MK Anwar, who led the four-member delegation, told reporters after their meeting with the CEC and other two election commissioners. The BNP delegation asked the EC to initiate steps for holding the stalled ninth parliamentary election within six months since the formation of the caretaker government on January 12. "Our expectation is that the next parliamentary election will be held by July 11. The chief election commissioner informed us that they will inform the nation in the next two or three weeks about a roadmap for holding the parliamentary election," MK Anwar said. The BNP delegation met the CEC three days after a high-powered Awami League delegation had met him demanding holding of the stalled ninth parliamentary election by June. Jatiya Party led by HM Ershad is scheduled to meet the CEC this afternoon and the Communist Party of Bangladesh will meet him tomorrow, sources said. Emerging from the hour long meeting, the BNP delegation chief said holding the parliamentary election as early as possible is within the EC's jurisdiction.

DNA 'WILL BE STOLEN' FROM ID CARDS
1:25 AM
FORMER Home Secretary Charles Clarke has called for DNA details to be put on the identity cards database ? despite warnings it will be accessed by crooks.Mr Clarke argues that current Government plans for ID cards are too timid and that the more information placed on them, the safer they will be from abuse. But last night the Home Office admitted fraudsters can already scan biometric passports without our knowledge. And campaigners warned that putting DNA on the database would take Britain?s £1.7billion annual identity fraud crisis to dangerous new levels.Tory MP Grant Shapps said: ?Imagine what will happen if all your information, everything about who you are is stored in one place. "It raises the prospect that information will be skimmed straight off your ID card as you walk down the street, simply by someone brushing past you.
