Firm offers to upgrade security in Pottstown schools
POTTSTOWN -- In the pursuit of a safer and sounder school district, the Pottstown School Board is pricing out security system upgrades. A local company, ASG Security of Gilbertsville, presented its ideas for improving the safety of children in the district on Thursday.The firm?s suggestions were technologically enhanced versions of current security measures, such as ID badges instead of keys, digital recording instead of tape, satellite instead of stationary access by monitors and the like.An assessment of current "exposed" or less-secured areas in the district included elementary school playgrounds, loading docks, side entrances and propped doors.The use of image enhancing cameras, which can be used day or night in indoors or outdoors, could be utilized as the main combatant of danger at these exposed locations.The cameras, and other equipment, would be leased from ASG and would be automatically updated as the technology progressed, instead of buying equipment outright which would someday become obsolete.The leasing option would also be helpful if and when the elementary school?s arrangement changes. ASG recommended not waiting for these changes to happen, but rather to upgrade the existing fire panel and add a burglary system in the elementary schools.

University to issue new ID cards beginning March 19
BOONE?Appalachian State University is issuing new AppCard identification cards. The new cards will be made for all students, except those graduating in May, staff and faculty and their dependents with university ID cards, and retirees.New AppCards will be issued beginning March 19 for students and beginning April 23 for all others. Currently issued AppCards will be invalid after June 30.The new cards will comply with laws prohibiting use of Social Security numbers as identification numbers. A new identification number has been assigned through the Banner System to everyone with a current AppCard.To receive a new AppCard, you must come to the AppCard Office in Trivette Hall during a specific time period. Bring your old card, or pay the $15 replacement cost. Old AppCards will be shredded.The picture that now appears on your AppCard will be transferred to the new AppCard, unless you wish a new picture. You do not need to know your Banner identification number to receive your new ID card.STUDENTSStudents will receive new AppCards March 19-April 20 (excluding April 9 and 10, which are holidays). The AppCard Office is open weekdays from 8 a.m.

Supervisors to consider program for marijuana ID cards
After passage of Proposition 215 to allow medicinal use of marijuana for treatment of ailments, the county has not yet adopted a system to give identification cards to those with doctor's recommendations for use of the drug. Representatives from Safe Access Now have asked Butte County to approve a program to approve identification cards on the county level to people with doctors' permits that will be submitted to the state. The program is voluntary and Aaron Smith, a spokesperson for Safe Access Now in Santa Rosa, said it can save hassle to people with prescriptions if issues arise with law enforcement.Smith said a previous request was made to the Board of Supervisors but was tabled, meaning people with doctors' recommendations for marijuana have been at risk of having unnecessary complications with use of their medicine.ID cards can help law enforcement distinguish between patients who have a doctor's permission from people who might have counterfeit documents, the advocacy group said.

Cameron: Swap ID cards for border police
Accompanied by shadow home secretary David Davis, he claimed that ID cards would "waste" up to £20 billion without securing borders and should instead be replaced by an integrated border police force. "Right now, our society is not properly defended against the drug dealers, people smugglers, gun importers and terrorists who find it all too easy to bypass the current system," Mr Cameron said. He argued: "Any country that is serious about its security must have properly policed borders. We're an island. It should be easier for us than it is for most countries. "But under Labour, we don't know who's coming in or who's going out. That is unacceptable and that why today we're announcing plans for the development of a dedicated border police." Mr Cameron confirmed that former Metropolitan police commissioner Lord Stevens will be appointed to lead the Conservatives' proposals for a border police force. Lord Stevens argued that it is "essential" Britain has secure borders, and "one element of that must be a dedicated and effective border police force".
