Port security finally rolls out employee ID badges as precaution
11:22 PM
The employee card system is assigned to defense contractor Lockheed Martin for $70 million, with the idea of eventually encompassing all transportation and pipeline personnel. It's a big order for an estimated 12 million workers eventually. Plus each card will cost about $137 for the holder.Even after ID cards bearing fingerprints, photos and bar codes are distributed, the real test will be monitoring how they're used on site and whether they make a real difference in protecting access. And since time is money, the badges will have to be readily available for new hires and legitimate contractors. As with newly implemented cargo screening procedures at some ports, delay and inadequate technology could up-end the perceived value of security.

Katy Newman: School ID badges waste our time
11:20 PM
From what I have heard, many other high schools in North Texas require students to wear ID badges in school. The students are told that badges are necessary to identify who goes to the school and who does not. Typically, it's demanded that they be worn visibly above the waist. Supposedly, this is for safety purposes. It's a magnificent idea in theory, but not in practice, especially in smaller towns like mine. For a long time, Little Elm prided itself on the fact that everyone knew everyone, and this is still generally the case. So I just don't understand the need for badges. First, I don't see how badges protect us from anything. Understandably, the purpose is to distinguish between students and non-students. However, if a stranger truly wanted to enter the school, he or she could do so without an ID. The doors are not locked. Likewise, if someone wanted to bring a gun to school, he or she could because we have no metal detectors. When working in the office as an aide, I have noticed visitors coming and going without passes. If random adults or students want to enter the school, it's all too easy. The only way for ID badges to protect us is to make them key cards for the doors, and even that system has loopholes.

Tech firms tangle with Tories on ID cards
11:18 PM
The IT industry has found itself in a handbagging spat with shadow home secretary David Davis over the Conservative party's plans to ditch ID cards should they win power from Labour.Davis' "official warning" to government said a democratic clause should be written into contracts with ID system suppliers so they could be scrapped if the electorate demanded so.John Higgins, chairman of IT trade body Intellect, promptly wrote to Davis warning him that the IT industry held such sway over the British economy that the Conservatives would be foolish to mess with them.Davis's response, sent yesterday, upbraided industry over its creepy anticipation that it would get lashings of gravy from a government project designed to encroach on people's civil liberties.Higgins had argued that the interests of big business should take precedent over the will of the British electorate.

SSUSD: Safety the reason for BHS badges
9:37 PM
She said it was put into place to help make students at school safer. When asked why the badges were in use only at Burroughs and not at elementary or middle schools, Rummer replied, ?They are implemented at the district level and at Burroughs because that is where we have begun to have safety issues regarding who belongs on campus.?When asked if there were any safety concerns with the ID badges or lanyards, Rummer replied, ?Students are old enough to behave responsibly while wearing lanyards. The safety concerns would be those that are the same for any article of clothing or jewelry worn around the neck. Students have been offered break away lanyards that break open at the back if pulled on. Also, they have been offered the use of a clip instead.?This is the first story in a series on using ID badges in schools. The Daily Independent will be examining the use of ID badges at schools elsewhere and getting feedback from Burroughs students about what they think of wearing ID badges at school.
