when is an I.D. card not an I.D. card? when it's an 'Access' card.
"... so we have come down against the present ID card, for three fundamental reasons: the first is the enormous invasion of privacy, the second is that the savings and the advantages of it are not great, and thirdly and most importantly, the cost of it ..." ~ John Howard 1987. "...the Goebbels technique - that is, if one says something that is untrue frequently enough, sooner or later the public will start to believe it. That is what the Government has been doing on every single public issue of any controversy. The ID card issue has been no exception." (The Hon John Howard MP,Australia Card Bill 1986: Second Reading, House of Representatives Hansard, 16 September 1987[3]) "Anybody who seeks to erode the private right must carry the onus of proving that there is an overwhelming public benefit in that private right being eroded. It is just not good enough, as this proposal assumes, to say to a government, 'We have a problem. We cannot collect enough tax', or 'We cannot stop enough welfare cheating'. In other words, to use what will become a memorable phrase of the Minister for Transport and Communications (Senator Gareth Evans), we have a systems failure under the present system so we have to turn everybody into a card subject to deal with that systems failure." (The Hon John Howard MP, Australia Card Bill 1986: Second Reading, House of Representatives Hansard, 16 September 1987[4])

All-Access Airport Attire At Large
The screeners would only talk if we concealed their identities and disguised their voices."Should we be concerned that these uniforms and badges are missing?""I would be."Since November of 2002, 789 uniforms and id badges are missing from LAX -- the most in the nation. That's nearly double Baltimore Washington Airport. They're at number two.By comparison Chicago's O'Hare Airport had 307 and JFK just 97.Locally -- Burbank is missing 30, John Wayne 22, Ontario nine and long beach three. These uniforms -- with TSA logo's and badges -- can get you just about anywhere."Into the back secure areas, into the back hallways, even back on the tarmac."That's because TSA workers get special treatment at the security
gates. With our undercover camera, watch the TSA worker on the right. He walks through the metal detector, it sounds an alarm, but he's allowed to continue without being checked. Full Article from CBS2.com.

Commissioners Issue State-Of-The-County Report
The sheriff?s office was very busy transporting inmates in 2006 to as many as six different prisons at the same time. The contract with Franklin County should decrease the amount of prisoner transport that the sheriff?s office has to perform. One sheriff?s vehicle was demolished in an accident in Breezewood. The sheriff?s office has increased security in the courtroom by having deputies in the courtroom for all Common Pleas Court sessions, including Central Court (see below). Hand-held metal detectors are also being used to scan members of the public entering the courtroom. The sheriff?s office will soon be providing photo ID badges for concealed carry permit holders.

LSI A banner business
Ezzell Jr., 33, took over the day-to-day operation of the family-owned business from his father three years ago and has brought new direction to the company. "Family businesses sometimes don't work, but we've been best friends," he said of his father. "He lets us do our own thing." More than 30 years ago, the senior Ezzell started a small business in his garage, laminating documents, ID badges and other projects. "A long time ago, it seemed like I didn't want to just put all the eggs in the same basket," Ezzell, 63, said. "Now, we are focusing on four distinct things that we do." The divisions that have made the garage business into the $10 million company it is today are digital printing, promotional products, identification supplies and lamination and bookbinding services. Of that $10 million, about $7 million comes from the identification division, where LSI has about 1 percent of the nation's identification services business. In addition to supplies such as ID badges and holders, LSI also has its own software that can re-badge an entire system -- such as 140,000 Verizon Wireless employees who got new LSI-produced badges recently -- or simplify keeping up with visitors by scanning a government-issued ID.

State probes group tied to L.A. County sheriff
Critics said the badges and identification cards appeared to be rewards for political contributions and had the potential for abuse. Two members told The Times last year that they flashed their badges to law enforcement officials, one to gain access to a secure area at Bob Hope Airport, the other when he became the subject of a criminal investigation. Raffi Mesrobian said he displayed both his Los Angeles County sheriff's ID card and Riverside County sheriff's executive council badge when state agents served a search warrant at his Glendale naturopathy office during a 2005 investigation. He was charged last year with grand theft, fraud and practicing medicine without a license. Mesrobian pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department opened an internal affairs investigation of Nalbandian, who is also a volunteer reserve deputy, more than six months ago and has not decided whether to suspend him while the inquiries are pending, department spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Focus rises on school safety
Recent incidents of students bringing weapons to school -- including last week's arrest of an eighth-grader who had a loaded handgun in his backpack at Edison Ronald McNair Academy in East Palo Alto -- have many wondering whether additional security measures are in order.``We need to have more police,'' said Carina Diaz, mother of a first-grader at Green Oaks Academy in the Ravenswood City School District, where anxious parents feel powerless to stem a recent wave of shootings and gang violence in the broader community. This month, a 13-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman have been shot to death in East Palo Alto. Many schools look to technology for the answer, discussing whether to add metal detectors, ID badges, or security cameras. But the far more effective course of action, campus safety experts say, is to build strong relationships -- among school staff, students, parents, community leaders and law enforcement.
