SUSD officials say safety measures are working
Trustees have considered including elementary schools in the ID policy, but cost is a deterrent; printing systems for the ID badges can cost as much as $8,000. At the high schools, however, administrators said requiring the badges helps formidably large campuses feel less anonymous and makes it easier for security monitors to know who students are and whether they are at school for legitimate reasons.Last year, Edison High School sophomore Julius Obedoza said, students from other high schools sometimes came to the Edison campus and started fights."This year, I haven't heard of any students coming in without ID," the 15-year-old said.

Showell Elementary Part Of School Safety Pilot Program
Founded in 1986, Ident-A-Kid Services of America, Inc., is the pioneer in child identification. Through its 200-plus programs, Ident-A-Kid annually provides over three million ID cards to parents at schools and other locations throughout the United States. The Ident-A-Kid card is a driver's license-like card that contains a child?s photograph, fingerprint and description. Parents keep the card with them at all times and, in an emergency, can provide law enforcement with it for immediate response.Iwaszko?s involvement with the Ident-A-Kid program has led him to the decision to donate the CCSS programs to all of the schools in the region. Roughly 200 schools, including Showell, have responded to the offer already and Iwaszko estimates the value of the initiative could exceed $100,000. Nonetheless, he is moving forward with the decision in order to bring new technology to an old problem.?School administrators struggle with how to make schools safer everyday,? he said. ?Although many schools are already using this software, an astounding number are still using the clipboard and sign-in log method that we all grew up with.?Iwasko said recent episodes of school violence, including
shootings in Colorado and Pennsylvania, inspired the idea to purchase the computer program and provide to all of the schools. ?After the most recent shootings, I decided to have my manufacturing plant get involved by purchasing and donating the necessary printers to the schools to help make our children safer,? he said. ?Although this is a massive undertaking, it is a logical extension from my Ident-A-Kid team, which has helped more than 300,000 Delmarva children over the last nine years.? National ID card has its critics
At a cost of up to $159 per ID card, they will replace the independent ID systems many ports have implemented.Lemaster said companies shouldn?t bear the burden for safety precautions that benefit everybody.?It should be a cost of homeland security,? he said, suggesting entrance to plants also be restricted to those with federal IDs.The State Ports Authority has issued about 8,000 ?smart badges? since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, when the authority revamped its security procedures, spokesman Byron Miller said.Badge applicants are required to watch a video on terrorism awareness and submit their drivers license number for a criminal background check. But if they aren?t a ports authority employee, Miller said, a more comprehensive background check cannot be performed. The national plan would allow for more complete background checks to be conducted.?We absolutely endorse the program,? Miller said. ?We think it?s essential.?
