School crisis response
Starting Monday, students at the high school and Tecumseh Options were required to have their student IDs visible on a cord around their neck at all times, just like the staff. High school principal Bob Schieck said most of the students are wearing them without complaint. Schieck said the staff is now working on how to enforce the wearing of the ID badges, which double as library cards, but for now is reminding students seen without their badges about wearing them. Students may also clip them to a shirt pocket or jacket lapel.

RFID Helps Occidental Petroleum Prepare for Emergencies
Occidental wanted a system that could tie into its existing software database for attendance tracking. As personnel pass through one of multiple gates to the facility, an exciter transmits a 125 kHz signal that activates their Axcess RFID badges. Each badge then transmits a 315 MHz signal containing its unique employee identification number, as well as the ID number of the exciter at that gate. The interrogator receives this data (the read range averages 35 to 300 feet, depending on the size of the reader's antenna) and sends it to Occidental's database. Software from Acrasoft then verifies the individual's ID number, automatically unlocking the gate to grant that person entrance.

Drunken schoolies are growing up
The fact is, most young people by 17 or 18 know how to look after their mates and know the difference between getting drunk and getting totally wasted.
Many have some sexual experience and have been drinking for some time. It's just typical of the scaremongering that one Queensland minister berated parents for giving their kids booze to take to Schoolies. But I'd much prefer to buy my teenager booze if it meant she took along alcohol she's used to and doesn't skoll from litre bottles of Jim Beam produced by strangers. It seems, thanks to ID badges, wristbands, free meals, free buses and volunteer helpers, Schoolies has come of age.Youth isn't always wasted on the young, even if now and again they do get wasted. Troubled high school struggles to get back on track
Harris, who arrived at Johnston last year, patrols hallways like a combination drill sergeant and glad-hander ? demanding respect but working the room like a Vegas maitre d'. "It used to be teachers kept a cool reserve," he says. "But now it's all about knowing the students."The school started requiring everyone to wear ID badges, so he spends a lot of time harassing kids without them. He alternates seamlessly between English and Spanish, honed while teaching at an urban Houston high school after college. He addresses students by name and badgers them until they respond. He stops a boy with a shaved head and sagging jeans, his shoulders pulled up and forward as if to ward off attention. "Show me the bandanna," Harris demands. "I'll give it back."The student protests, but not particularly hard; he and Harris have done this before. Eventually, he turns over the colors and shows a tattoo.
