Sculptures recall Wales mining days
3:04 AM
Situated in the Afan Valley, the community inspired sculpture trail will tell the story of the valley and its people during the most dynamic era in Welsh history.
Local pupils have created a series of drawings, poems and designs with Groundwork?s Artists in Residence Carlos Pinatti and Anne Gibbs, based on artefacts, photographs and the history of Duffryn Rhondda Colliery. These will be used to craft sculptures and other symbols linked to the industrial era, such as miner?s ID badges and boundary markers.

School Committee notes
3:03 AM
The School Committee showed unanimous support for two motions regarding student safety that were endorsed by its Policy and Procedures Subcommittee. Both ideas, to require identification badges for students and to establish a policy for students' online use, were brought to the committee by Arlington High School Principal Charlie Skidmore. The principal explained ID badges would make it easier to tell if people are in the building who shouldn't be, and help teachers identify students who are being disruptive outside the classroom. Teachers recommended the policy last year. With School Committee approval, he said, the ID badges could be ready by second semester.

Student Safety an Important Issue
3:01 AM
Photo ID cards are another security feature at Delaware Valley. All teachers, administrators, secretaries, and other staff are required to visibly wear ID cards during the school day, either on a lanyard or clipped to their clothing. Similarly, visitors must wear an ID card while traversing DV hallways. This allows for a quick check by staff and students to see if someone has legitimately entered the school.Students, on the other hand, are not required to wear ID badges during the school day. At some schools, this practice is mandatory.Hall monitors rove the building during the school day. The hall monitors are equipped with walkie-talkies, which allow them to keep in touch with each other, and with main office secretaries.

Cameras, monitors are key to safety
2:58 AM
To keep an outside intruder from entering BPS buildings, all of the doors are locked during the school day except for the main front doors. Visitors to the school must report to the front office before going anywhere else in the building. While some visitors may be able to sneak past the office, Rippe said, they won't get far because visitors and staff alike are required to wear ID badges. "Our goal is if someone were to get in, they wouldn't be in the building very long," he said.
