Recent events highlight concern for safe schools
At Tuesday?s school board meeting, Re-J1 school district spokeswoman, Linda Gann, reviewed the school safety practices such as I.D. badges for staff, perimeter safety checklists and cameras on school buses. ?Schools are still the safest place for kids,? Gann said.She said there are current safety measures already in place. In every room, in every school, there is an emergency procedure flip-chart that contains guidance and strategies that are helpful in emergency cases, like a fallen aircraft or kidnapping.

Students Wear ID Badges at Ben Lomond High
Ben Lomond High in Ogden is in its fourth year now of requiring students and staff to wear ID badges. The principal say the kids and some parents didn't like it at first, but as people got used to the change, it has made the school safer.
The dress code at Ben Lomond High is like any other public school, except for one thing, students and faculty are required to wear ID badges. Curtis Windley, Senior: "It's really not that bad, just because it's really small." Full Article from KSL.com.

Morning Roundup: Unseasonably Warm Edition
The Post has an interesting story this morning on a new policy at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring. Students at the school are upset that they're being forced to wear color-coded ID badges that correspond with different "academies" they're assigned to ? essentially branding the each student as belonging to groups like the smart kids, the students who need help with English, and incoming Freshmen, for all to see. Call us crazy, but we tend to agree with the two-thirds of polled students who are calling the policy a "hideous embarrassment."

Making schools safe for students
PIERRE - The recent school shootings in Colorado and Pennsylvania have placed renewed focus on school security around the country.After Columbine, schools nationwide were equipped with security guards, video cameras and I.D. badges for students and staff. New additions continue with every passing school year.The Pierre School District is no exception to those changes.

BOE approves School Watch plan
Judy Houle presented an outline for a job description to the School Board that emphasized the need for School Watch volunteers to work closely with school resource officers and principals, that children are never to be touched, no School Watch equipment is to be taken from school property and volunteers will not hold the schools responsible for any accidents that occur.?The program would be staffed by parents and grandparents. They would have background checks, ID badges and walkie talkies to communicate any problems to the SRO or the principal,? Houle said.
