Employee badges eyed as potential hole in security

The report by the San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury called the system for monitoring the use of the building?s special entrance for employees and those with ID badges, or card-keys, ?less than ideal.? It recommended that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and the Sheriff?s Office consider random spot-checks of identification at the entrances and become more stringent about deactivating the badges once an employee no longer works in the building.

Letter: Supports officer presence at AHS

ID card badges on the other hand ("Photo ID planned for AHS students, staff," Oct. 5 Advocate), are no substitute for active entrance and hallway monitoring. I continue to be impressed by how quickly I am "greeted" at elementary schools and at the Ottoson Middle School. This type of visitor control is much less cumbersome than ID cards, which will be lost by some and perhaps duplicated by others.

The students have handled the new block schedule, having to wear ID badges, and increased efforts to strengthen a positive classroom environment very well. All of the feedback that I have received from the community has been positive. We can not be successful without the support of parents and the community. We thank you for all of your efforts.

Feds to flash new badges

"From a historical perspective, the security industry has been moving from simple photo-ID badges to machine-readable cards for the past 10 years," said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance, a New Jersey trade group.In recent years, the market has moved to even more sophisticated versions, such as smart cards with programmable microprocessors that can store biometric data. Such cards can be read by wireless devices that download data to verify that the credential is authentic.

Students Wear ID Badges at Ben Lomond High

Ben Lomond High in Ogden is in its fourth year now of requiring students and staff to wear ID badges. The principal say the kids and some parents didn't like it at first, but as people got used to the change, it has made the school safer.The dress code at Ben Lomond High is like any other public school, except for one thing, students and faculty are required to wear ID badges.

School insecurity: Are our kids safe?

Another student noticed them and their lack of IDs and reported them to an administrator. The males were caught leaving the cafeteria and authorities later discovered weapons, baseball bats and knives, in their car."If not for that extra safety step (of ID badges), there's no telling what those kids would have done," said Curtis Bibb, the city system's assistant superintendent of administration and accountability. "If not that day, then sometime in the future."
