Tighter security all around, but are we safer?
Local communities did what they could. In Wellington, officials installed taller, code-controlled fences around the water and wastewater treatment plant to keep the public from entering the village's emergency management center without authorization.
In West Palm Beach, officials eliminated use of some volatile chemicals at its water and wastewater treatment plant and now employ guards at the facility's entrance. They beefed up security in other places, too, requiring ID badges for all visitors to City Hall and closing three entrances to create one walkway in and out of the building. At the Palm Beach County Governmental Center across the street, visitors must pass through metal detectors manned by two guards. Full Article from Sun-Sentinel.com.

Challenge of 9/11 strengthened, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief
Southern Baptist volunteers stayed in the ?brig? -- a collection of former jail cells at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard -- during their weeks of service in New York.

Our trucks would bring in supplies to them at the worksites.? Full Article from BPNews.net.

RHS addresses dress code, overcrowding
Reeves said there sometimes were not enough chairs in the cafeteria to accommodate the number of students there. He said the administration hoped to alleviate some of the tensions that came up last year by giving students more room to move. Another concession is that principal Diane Mankins has decided to remove the punitive consequences for students not wearing their ID badges. The badges are required for checking out library books and other privileges. Students without badges will be given name tag stickers, but no one will be punished for leaving a badge at home or otherwise being without it.

More schools confront possible safety threats
Other security measures might include requiring ID badgesfor any adult entering a school building.Schools should also discuss locking all exterior doors except one central entrance. Some schools have installed exterior cameras to allow the central office to monitor anyone entering. One of the easiest changes is ensuring emergency numbers are prominently displayed for everyone on school property, including teachers inside their classrooms. The best policies will help school staff and emergency personnel deal with a broad range of potential threats, without scaring the daylights out of staff and children. Threats include a student with a weapon, a weather crisis, an estranged parent trying to take a child from school, exposure to an infectious disease or hazardous substance, or an explosion.
