COTE D IVOIRE: Row erupts over ID cards in new blow to peace
ABIDJAN, 11 August (IRIN) - A dispute this week over plans to hand out ID cards to millions of undocumented residents of war-divided Cote d'Ivoire threatens to further disrupt the country's faltering peace process.
With more than one out of five Ivorians without identification papers, a nationwide scheme is currently underway to determine who among Cote d'Ivoire's 16 million people has Ivorian nationality and thus voting privileges in peace-sealing elections that have been scheduled for 31 October. Warning on ID cards cost
Said Mr Brazier, of NO2ID Horsham: "The Government still can't explain or provide evidence on how ID cards will solve all the problems that it has claimed they will, and it has no answer to people's fears that their personal information will be abused, spread around or even sold."Assurances about keeping the system secure are laughable in light of the appalling track record of Government IT, and all this secrecy about the mess they are in at even this early stage just shows they can't be trusted."The people of Horsham deserve to know just how many hospital beds, school places and public services the Government is willing to sacrifice in pursuit of ID cards and the highly intrusive database behind them."

Post-9/11 New York: Checks & Balances
The September 11th terrorist attacks transformed Manhattan into an island of high security and occasional personal insecurity. Soldiers still patrol all major transportation hubs and historic sites. Security guards now inspect purses, briefcases and shopping bags at the entrances to department stores, theaters and office buildings. Many workers carry I.D. badges or computerized cards to gain entrance to their workplaces.

University of Maryland Medical Center has 10,000 ID cards in field
The Medical Center at the University of Maryland has more than 10,000 ID cards in circulation at any given time using the mag stripe for access, ID, and secure camera control in operating rooms. They are now using Zebra's

IET endorses parliamentary report on ID cards and scientific advice
The IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology), Europe?s largest professional engineering society has called on the Home Office to adopt the recommendations regarding consultation on scientific and technical issues made in the report of the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee into the use of scientific advice on ID Cards. The committee recommends that the Home Office undertakes future consultations on scientific and technical issues and not
simply on the procurement process. The IET, which has a long track record of providing impartial expert advice to government,said it welcomed this recommendation as it would help improve the process of policy making. Full Article from EGOVmonitor.com.

Brown to let shops share ID card data
Far from intending to dump ID cards once he is in Downing Street, Brown is quietly studying how biometric technology - identifying people by unique markers such as fingerprints and iris patterns - could be expanded over the next 20 years to fight crime.
