Badges of dishonor
Earlier this month, after questions arose about their legality, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca started recalling the photo ID cards that he issued to his Homeland Security Support Unit (politicalese for "campaign contributors and other pals"). But he plans to redesign and redistribute the things as soon as he gets the legal OK. The leader of this unit is the owner of a tire store ? and a key political fund-raiser. You'd think Baca would know better after the 1999 disbandment of his "celebrity" reserve unit, which had been provided badges and guns until two members were arrested in separate incidents.

ID cards to be mandatory in U.K. by 2010
U.K. lawmakers have agreed to a compromise proposal that will see ID cards become mandatory for British passport holders by 2010. Previously the ID cards bill, which the House of Lords rejected five times over the past few weeks, required anyone renewing a passport to also receive an ID card by 2008.

Lords defiant on ID cards
The House of Lords defeated Government plans for compulsory identity cards for a fifth time yesterday despite warnings that it was creating a constitutional crisis.
Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and crossbenchers backed by 219 votes to 191, a majority of 28, an amendment by Lord Armstrong of Ilminster, a former cabinet secretary, enabling citizens to opt out when ID cards are introduced from 2008. Full Article from Telegraph.com.

(BW) Northeast Medical Center Selects Encentuate's Healthcare Identity and Access Management Solution
The solution will eliminate the dependence on multiple passwords, which will help increase caregiver productivity and quality of patient care, and reduce helpdesk cost. The solution also allows Northeast Medical Center to integrate both information and physical access into the existing employee ID badges, using proximity-based RFID technology. Northeast Medical Center and Encentuate have started a multiple phase rollout, which includes registering more than 1,500 end users and deploying the solution across all clinical and support departments.

JHM pilots commuter shuttle from Fells Point and Canton
Johns Hopkins Medicine last week began a three-month pilot of a commuter shuttle between Fells Point/Canton and the East Baltimore campus. The service is free for Hopkins employees, faculty and students carrying their ID badges. The morning hours of operation begin with a 6:30 a.m. pickup at Aliceanna and South Chester streets and end with a 9:15 a.m. drop-off at Jefferson and Wolfe streets. Evening hours begin at 4:30 p.m. with a pickup at Jefferson and Wolfe streets and end with a drop-off at 7:45 p.m. at South Washington and Gough streets.
