New corrections secretary vows to beat `good ol' boys'
In October, a former minor league baseball player was arrested on a grand theft charge after he told investigators he was hired to help the prison team win the department tournament but never worked. An internal department investigation released this week found that an assistant warden at Santa Rosa Correctional Institution was making false ID badges so non-employees could play on prison athletic teams.

FPL Provides Information on Identifying Its Workers
Santos also said that if you are at all in doubt as to whether or not the workers are legitimate, immediately call the local police and after doing that, call the FPL customer service number listed at the bottom of your bill.Tips for Safely Identifying FPL Workers -- All FPL employees carry photo ID badges with their photograph and name clearly visible; this includes meter readers. -- If FPL workers need access to the interior of a home or business, prior arrangements will be made.

Prison Chief Fires Top Employees
The DOC inspector general found that Lamar Griffis, while he was assistant warden at Santa Rosa CI, produced DOC staff ID badges for nonemployees to participate on athletic teams, including softball.Witnesses told DOC investigators that the spouses and friends of many prison employees were among those receiving the fake IDs to participate.

Games bring visitors; how about business?
?A lot of folks here for the Games were wearing ID badges, so we got to where we recognized them,? Mulvey said. ?And it was not just competitors. There were officials and support staff, too.?But not all Homer businesses were as fortunate. Although closed for the winter, Jackie Dentz opened Frosty Bear Ice Cream Parlor in anticipation of increased business as a result of the Games.?But there was absolutely zero impact,? said Dentz, adding, ?We did have a lot of people come down just to photograph eagles. Thank God we?re still feeding those eagles.?

A uniform and badge did the trick
Next we discussed name badges. Pete wanted the plumbers to wear pin-on identity badges including their full names. An employer can insist that an employee displays their full name, provided it is safe for the employee to do so. For example, if showing the full name might mean that someone could trace the employee outside work and harass them, that would not be safe. This is probably not an issue for Pete's staff. Pete decided to have badges with Christian names only but also to issue employees with photo ID cards with their full names on them. They would carry these cards at work and display them uponrequest.

Security breaches often lead to shrugs
In the wake of the Logan case - which came 3 1/2 years after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in which two airplanes from the airport were hijacked - officials finally changed the rules regarding who may issue security badges."We ended the practice of allowing outside contractors to issue ID badges for our airport," said Logan Communications Director Danny Levy. "We were like, 'Forget it. We'll do it ourselves.' " She was surprised to learn that not everyone has taken similar steps.
