We are giving the authorities an open invitation to abuse their power
It is a depressing experience to go away for just eight days, and to return to a country substantially more illiberal than when you left. The Commons vote to support a bill outlawing the glorification of terrorism and the sanctioning of the ID cards bill are part of the slide towards a more authoritarian society, and yet few of us seem to care.

RFID News Roundup
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and HID, maker of RFID-enabled smart cards for identification and access control, report that they are collaborating on a joint effort to address concerns around the privacy and security of personal data used in connection with RFID technology. The two organizations are developing a Web site intended to serve as a public forum to discuss RFID and public policy. They will also explore means of using RFID technology to enhance the security of personal information linked to RFID-enabled devices, such as ID badges or key cards.

Safety concerns, academics discussed at BOE
The idea of ID badges had been brought up at prior meetings, and it is the opinion of the committee that badges will not solve or prevent potential problems. In summary, Seldomridge made it plain that committee exists and that they are hard at work to make KHS a safer place to learn.

'Rumormongers'
To an American eye it looks so severe and dour. My hunch is that it?s because there aren't all that many personal cameras on the continent. Most photos here are taken for formal portraits, passport pictures, ID badges, etc. That's in contrast to the US, where most photos are informal snapshots taken with the millions of cameras that Americans own.

FOOT IN MY MOUTH
Number three, Big Brother struck again. Employers are beginning to encroach on employees' personal lives more and more. Smoking bans are being levied for times when employees aren't even at work. Now a company wants to replace ID badges with microchips. These could turn into tracking devices to control even more what employees do outside of work. It is not employers' business what is done outside of the company walls.

'07 students to wear ID tags'
The district had contemplated a photo ID policy in 1998, but some trustees thought such a policy was unenforceable and preferred requiring school uniforms instead.
Lancaster High officials started discussing student ID badges after a vice principal read last fall about a school in Garden Grove that has such a program. Then a trustee mentioned that schools in Long Beach do it. Kreitz said she has discussed the plan with members of the school's parent committee and they favor the idea.
