Georgia GOP challenging Voting Rights Act renewal, likely in vain

Supporters of reauthorization say it's fitting that the most vocal opposition is coming from Georgia, which recently had a federal court rule it couldn't enact a new law requiring voters without a driver's license to pay for a state-issued ID badge. Lewis equates the move to a poll tax, falling disproportionately on minorities, but the Justice Department cleared it.

DPD investigating possible cop impersonation

To boy told investigators that he asked the man to show identification. The suspect produced some form of an ID card and stated his name was "Officer Devon Brown." Denver Police say the have no officers with that name.The boy describes the suspect as a black male, early30's, tall, muscular build, spiked hair, clean shaven with a mole under his right eye and a scar under his left cheek. He was wearing ablue suit and a badge which was partially covered, according to police. No gun was produced. The suspect left the areadriving a white car with no police emblem.

Battle lines are drawn over national ID cards

FREEPORT - A federal law requiring all Americans to trade in their driver's licenses for standardized national identification cards is raising ire among watchdogs who say implementing the law will costs states millions and expose citizens to additional costs and identity thieves. The Real ID Act of 2005, signed into law by President George W. Bush in May, requires that state driver's license offices handle the transfer of one card for the other by May 2008. The ID card will require digital photographs and more vigilant validation of birth certificates and Social Security cards. States will also be responsible for establishing fraudulent document recognition training programs for employees who issue the cards.

School scanner stands watch on abusers

Once a person's driver's license or photo ID badge is scanned, V-soft prints a badge with the visitor's name, driver's license photo and destination, which visitors must wear while in school. The information is automatically stored in the school's computers, so administrators don't even have to leave their desk to find the number of school visitors, who they are, where they are headed and what they look like.

Axalto and System Integrator Zetes Keep up Fast Pace of Europe's Largest National eID Program Cartes 2005 Congress: Axalto (EURONEXT:AXL) and (EURONEXT:NL0000400653), the world's leader in microprocessor cards, and system integrator Zetes, today announced the delivery of more than two million electronic identity cards for the Belgian Personal Identity card (BelPIC) program by the end of this year. Initiated in 2003, the BelPIC roll out started a year ago and is expected to reach 11 million cards by 2009.

Encoded ID cards Required to Access Criminal Cases at Alabama Department of Forensic

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences traces its roots to one of the USA's oldest crime laboratory systems. Originally formed during the Great Depression in 1935, the agency was part of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and was tasked with cooperating with coroners to determine the cause of death in cases involving foul play and to provide scientific assistance to all law enforcement agencies in the state. Today, the agency still uses leading-edge science to solve crimes, but it is now a separate state agency with its own funding based in Auburn, Ala.

No butts about it at town hospital : Milford Regional employees cannot smoke outside, either

Hoping to promote a healthier image, Milford Regional Medical Center is again trying to snuff out smoking on its grounds. Cancer patients and heart attack victims enter the hospital each day, with countless more children passing by the Rte. 16 campus in cars and school busses. For that reason, the hospital no longer wants its employees, often wearing scrubs, ID badges and other hospital garments, to be seen standing outside holding a cigarette.
