Smart ID badges and Access Control for 1 Police Plaza
4:17 AM
SAIC designed, integrated and is currently implementing a Smart ID System for more than 55,000 NYPD personnel. Smart ID Badges are being issued to all NYPD personnel. The Smart ID Badges contain state-or-the-market capabilities including biometric templates, advanced security features, embedded computer chips and RFID antennas. The Smart ID badge holds essential personnel data, documents time-and-attendance information, and provides access control to police facilities. The badges store each cardholder's personal biometrics for positive identification and secure operations. The badge also contains encrypted personal data, a high-quality photo, digital signature, and time-and-attendance application that integrate with the New York City Time and Attendance database. NYPD personnel can log into and out of work, request vacation and/or sick leave and conduct other functions using their ID card and a PDA in the field.

High school students to be issued ID badges
11:48 AM
Students at Smith-Cotton High School will join their teachers in wearing identification badges while in the building.

The students' ID badges may be worn around the neck on a lanyard, and students will have to wear them while in the building.

Principal Todd Whitney said that requiring the ID badges "makes it easy to determine who belongs and who doesn't."

Students will be able to use the badges to check out books from the school's library.

Mr. Whitney said that several times in recent years, people without visitor's badges who aren't students have wandered the building. The badges will be "just a way to control the flow of traffic in the building."
