A plan to ID students Culpeper High to require badges
1:11 AM
A new Culpeper County High School rule requiring students to wear photo identification badges at all times during school hours is meeting with mixed reviews."It makes you feel like you're in prison," said Laura Ames, a rising junior. "You have to identify yourself all the time like you're in trouble.""Maybe it's a step toward getting the school under control, but I still think it's pointless," said Noel Spence, also a junior.Pointless or not, wearing a photo ID around your neck will be the rule this school year, and students who don't have their badges displayed will be subject to disciplinary action."It will help with the security and safety of all the students in the school," Porter said. "[A photo ID system] helps when you have that many kids."

How safe are your children in local schools?
12:33 AM
Looking after the safety of every child in a school district is a huge responsibility and a task of enormous importance, officials say. It?s also a job Greenwood School District 50 is more than capable of handling, Superintendent Bill Steed said. Some questions were raised recently as to the district?s ability to keep students safe after a 4-year-old student at Oakland Elementary School was lost within the building. The child was reported missing after having gone into another teacher?s classroom Aug. 10 and was found safe inside the building about an hour later, after a search party had been launched to search the area around the school. In an Internet poll conducted by The Index-Journal, readers were asked if they were ?confident in the security procedures in place in area schools.? As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, 212 responses had been received. Of those, 86 percent (or 182 responders) answered no.Steed said he could understand why there would be concerns following last week?s incident. He also said steps have been taken already to prevent such an occurrence from happening again. Security measures will continue to be improved, he said.In several of District 50?s elementary schools, the younger students wear ID badges at the beginning of the school year.

12:31 AM
Students in the East Bay will be wearing something new this school year, but some are not too happy about it.All high school students in the West Contra Costa School District will have to wear picture ID badges.Administrators said the badges will help keep track of who belongs on campus. Many students say having to wear a picture ID at all times is a bit extreme.Parents and teachers, on the other hand, said it's an inexpensive way to watch over the high school campuses."I sympathize with the fact they feel encroached upon, but at the same time a parent's primary concern is the safety of their child,? said Linda Takimoto, with the PTSA.

UK Home Office publishes tender plan for ID Cards
12:30 AM
In the UK, the Home Office is urging suppliers to get ready for a massive tender for biometric ID Cards. It is likely that the legislation to push the cards through, currently before Parliament, will lead to almost immediate moves towards the establishment of a National Identity Cards scheme.Contracts are likely to require the provision of such services to deliver the scheme covering all resident United Kingdom citizens and others entitled to British passports, and, in the case of Identity Cards, up to the whole adult (over 16) population of the UK (including certain foreign nationals) for the duration of the contracts (which may vary in start date and duration).
