Build a better milk carton
12:21 AM
Five years have passed since Molly Bish was abducted from Comins Pond in Warren, where she worked as a lifeguard. Yet Magi Bish still wonders if an up-to-date photograph could have led to her daughter's safe recovery."If we had a poster-specific photo of her printed on an identification card we could have gotten it to the police right away," Bish said from her Warren home. "I don't know if it would have made a difference in Molly's case because they didn't even come to us for a photo until 24 hours after she was reported missing. But the most important thing is time, and we lost too much time trying to find a picture of Molly."

Govt and business meet to discuss national security
12:20 AM
National security was on the agenda at a meeting between senior Government Ministers and business leaders in Canberra today. The group discussed how to protect mass gatherings of people, like sporting events, from terrorist attacks and whether to bring in a national identification card. It's only the second time the Business-Government advisory group has met and the first since last month's London bombings.PHILIP RUDDOCK: No, but they didn't oppose it either. They recognised the importance of securing people's identity, but people want to be satisfied that they're not exposed to other dangers if you go down that sort of route.KIM LANDERS: What assessment is being made about whether or not an ID card system would markedly improve security anyway?PHILIP RUDDOCK: Well, I mean, we'd take advice from competent agencies in relation to those matters, but the question is not whether or not it would improve security.

Fargo Launches New DESFire Encoding Option to Protect Private Identity Data
3:21 PM
Minneapolis, MN (August 10, 2005) ? Fargo Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ: FRGO), a global leader in secure technologies for card identity systems, today announced the availability of a DESFire encoding option for its card printer/encoders. DESFire, a highly secure contactless smart card technology based on the industry-leading MIFAREŽ platform, will offer the speed, functionality and convenience of a contactless card while maintaining a high degree of security.

DESFire allows high-speed, triple-Data Encryption Standard (3DES) RF encryption between the contactless card and the reader. It is used wherever high-speed, highly secure data transmissions are necessary such as access control, government, financial and healthcare applications.

?The key advantage of the DESFire card is the strong security provided by the smart chip technology,? said John Ekers, Fargo?s director of product marketing for systems and software. ?The DESFire card encrypts the information stored on the chip as well as the communications between the chip and the DESFire reader.

?There are a number of ID badging project opportunities developing as a result of government initiatives like HSPD-12 and HIPAA where the operational security and privacy characteristics of the DESFire card are ideally suited. With Fargo as the first to market with this technology in our card printer/encoders, it gives us a competitive advantage,? continued Ekers.

Beginning immediately with the HDP600 Card Printer/Encoder, the DESFire encoding option will be available with the full range of Fargo?s High Definition Printing? and Direct-to-Card product lines.

Trooper-like badges, IDs go to the well-connected
12:14 AM
They carry gold badges with photo identification cards that look almost identical to those held by Tennessee Highway Patrol officers. But they are not troopers. An exclusive group of campaign donors, political insiders and friends of the powerful are issued these police IDs under a state "honorary captain" program with no background checks, no criteria, no guidelines, no oversight, no application forms and no expiration dates.Officials say the program is an atta-boy, a way to recognize people's contributions to the state. But critics say it's an invitation for the well-connected to brandish their influence and avoid getting tickets.
